Title: Faceted paperweights
Post by: alexander on October 04, 2006, 01:35:07 AM
Hi, i could use with some help in identifying these paperweights,
i have found them on an online auction abd they're attributed as italian.

The designs look italian but the faceted finish and prevalence of bubbles make me sceptical.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

What auction? When, where? These are Czech-made. Almost looks like a catalogue pose. Interesting. Thanks.

Those are all Modern Bohemian weights circa the mid-late 1980s to possibly present day.

Jargstorf's book, page 109 if memory serves, talks about these and has a photo showing weights of like design and faceting.

Here are 2 more examples from my collection:

BTW, someone awhile ago talked about a way to shorten these links, eg, some people are able to simply have there links read as 'link' or as 'here'.
I'd like to know how that is done.
If told, I hope I can understand it  :?

Mark, I think the comment to which you're referring has to do with shortening eBay links. I definitely recall Frank discussing that in a recent previous post.

What he wrote was that with eBay links, you click on the Bid link on the item page. When the who has bid page appears (even if no one has bid), the browser link will be much shorter. Highlight and copy the browser link that will appear at the top of the page. This will be shorter than the item description page link. Then paste it into your reply box on the GMB.

If Frank has a way to shorten other potential hyperlinks, I haven't seen it recently. But, I am sure he will reply when he sees this exchange.

This specific thread is stretching too wide and extending beyond the normal monitor boundaries because of the original photo in the first post; it was definitely copied from a web photo with a very long link.

Great collection!
I have only 1 faceted paperweight in my collection (Italian).
I'll post it when I get a chance!

Another way to shorten links is:

here

Without the spaces, it will look like this here (http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=4162494&a=30945251&p=74861294)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies - the auction was a just ending one by an auctionhouse in norway that sells just about anything.

They didn't have any other pics or mention of age/mfg etc. which made it difficult to bid - the price was 110 USD.

Btw - what would be the value of these?

The lot - so i kinda ended up buying them, one for my collection and four to sell

It was hard to tell from the listing what to make of it in terms of age etc, most of the new czech paperweights i've seen looks different and this particular house often sells stuff it knows zip about.

I wouldn't have seen it had it not been mistakenly labelled as millefiori, which is my favorite paperweight technique.

That's a nice piece  :D

I picked the faceted lot up yesterday and haven't been able to find out much more about them. They're almost certainly modern bohemian.

Some controlled bubbles and some not so controlled, they were in good condition, no signatures or identifying marks as far as i can tell.

The price i paid was probably not the cheapest possible but not terrible either. Three were magnums, i'm pretty sure it's lead crystal in all of them.

Will post more as i find out.

$110 (USD) for the lot is a very good price, especially if you're not looking for an immediate return on what you spent. They are good-looking paperweights, and the faceting enhances the value. I think you had a lucky find.

Hi, thought I'd post an update on this - I just got the Paperweights book
by Jargstorf in and there, on page 109, just as Mark mentioned, were my weights.

Well, not mine but almost identical, they are identified in the book as
being Hungarian production based on an old design, spotted in a flea
market in 1989 so presumably made sometime before.

Will post more if I find the maker.

Thanks
