Title: Suncatcher clear glass bird - ID = Hadeland
Post by: glassobsessed on April 05, 2010, 07:11:16 PM
It sort of reminds me of Oiva Toikka's Kastehelmi (Dewdrop) tableware pattern, or is that because it's bird shaped? ::)

About 16 cm long and 13cm tall, pattern on both sides.

It seems familiar but I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Cheers, John.

Bit of a bump really and has this seller made up the attribution? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200529674665&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

John

Maybe I am going around in circles and they read it here.

Aha so you have one. I had seen the relation but this item is very lightweight, as opposed to all other Kastelhelmi I have ever handled - so I attributed it to inspiration or flattery. Until one turns up in Iittala documentation it will have to remain so...

Yes they are quite thin and light in weight Ivo, I had not made that distinction, the pattern is not really right for Kastehelmi either.

This one hangs in my kitchen, I have often wondered if they could start a fire like a paperweight can, all those little lenses focusing sunlight. Maybe I should check the focal lengths.....

I notice there is another one on ebay with the same attribution finishing in a few hours, that is, if anyone is interested and can handle the fire risk. >:D

Have just been surfing and ran into this: http://www.antique-vintage.net/glass/q135.html

So our birdies look like they may be from Hadeland and so Norwegian. :X:

John, I have added "-possibly Hadeland?" to the title. Might get some more looks.

Hi all,  I can verify they are Hadeland.  They came as a set of three in a box...An angel, A Christmas Tree and A Bird (yours).

How do I know?

Well, I had one (the bird) and sold it on eBay as iittala Kastehelmi, because that was what I was told it was,  then about a week later, a set came up for sale in its box with the pictures on the box as well.....Hadeland !!  I felt badly that I had missold ot,  but it was in all innocence....wish I had bought the set now!!

Sorry, but is this a Hadeland angel suncatcher?  Thank you.

Hi Anik  :)

Yup,  it sure is, but they did several styles of Angel 3 to my knowledge, and the one in the box was the same style as the bird and the tree....wish I had bought it now,  but the bidding went too high.  They did a star as well......but I don't think that was in the boxed set.
I have to be honest and say I prefer your Angel,  much prettier and with more detail.
I'll see if I can find some reference to the boxed set, as that does then help.

Added 09.36am: Anik,  just had a better look at your Angel,  and on reflection,  looking at the little droplets on the skirt,  I think yours WAS the one in the set.  I don't remember the wings being so pretty.  I guess I was focusing more on the bird as I was feeling so guilty about mis selling it. :-[

Thanks Kevin and Rosie, I had no idea it was part of a set. It sounds like it might be a Christmas set of some sort, I wonder what the significance of the bird is? Perhaps an element in a traditional story.

I no longer have mine (auctioned and it did surprisingly well).

I Will keep an eye out for another set and add it to this thread if I see one.  Usually come up around October/ November time.
I'll also see if I can get some info on why there was a bird John... as you say,  may have been part of a story or folk tale.

The suncatcher is labelled a sparrow in Hadeland’s catalogue. It’s part of a series of suncatchers designed as Christmas decorations, made from early 1980s until late 1990s. Made in FLC, they also comprised a heart, a stocking, a bell, an angel, a star, a Christmas tree and two different snow flakes. Some were also available in green and blue. No designer is named in the catalogues of the time.

Small birds like sparrows are common symbols of Christmas, as a reminder to let the benign spirit of Christmas extend to the little ones as well, and feed them during the harsh winter.

Oh mbmb,  what a wonderful ending....the full story.....thank you so much.   :)

Now I want the whole set and I so regret selling the little Sparrow. And you say there is a heart, stocking and a bell...wow,  I just have to have them.

Do you know if there is a site where we can see pictures of the set, so we know what we are looking for?

Where is your location mbmb?  Are you in Norway?

Hi Rosie

I’m glad you appreciated the story of the Hadeland suncatcher(s). Yes, my location is Oslo. Quite a few people here in Norway have a window full of these suncatchers at Christmas (not that we enjoy many daylight hours around here at that time).

Hadeland glassworks has operated continuosly since 1762, but still there’s no museum website or even much in print about the vast range of Hadeland products over the years. I've tried to post photo of a page in the catalogue, but the attachment is too big, or so the system says.

Best of luck on the suncatcher catching!

Hi again mbmb,  our 'Technical Wizard', Anne, may be able to help you with the picture sizing.
If you look at the top of the home page you will see all the info on posting pictures here, and it is written by Anne,  so if you have difficulty,  I am sure she will help....her email is a little envelope on the left hand side of the page.
Do make sure that by posting the picture,  you are not infringing copyright,  but Anne will tell you more about that.

It's always nice to have a catch up on old threads, and I did promise that if I saw any of these I would post on here.
This looks like a bell,  but the box has other pieces illustrated,  including the star and more importantly,  the bird.  Sorry it doesn't seem to show the Angel Anik,  but one will turn up eventually,

Just to explain my thoughts , i had an iiTTALA baby chick egg cup that you could stand on edge to display or lay flat as an egg cup with three scoops one large two small for egg salt and pepper . it flew out when listed . jp
