Title: Lampwork boxer dog and fish by whom?
Post by: scavo on May 17, 2012, 07:56:19 PM
I thought this boxer might be Pirelli when I picked it up today and I found a few matches on ebay when I got home.

But the little fish didn't find a match. Could it also be Pirelli?

On balance, having looked at a labelled Pirelli boxer in the Glass Zoo, I would say he wasn't Pirelli

I can't find Pirelli on there. I've looked through all the mammals and when I search there is nothing for Pirelli on there.

There are two boxer dogs: one standing and one begging. You have to be a member to use the Glass Zoo

Ah, I'm looking at the wrong glass zoo.

I don't have a credit card so can't subscribe to the Ysart site.

I was going off this photo

I go along with Christine about the boxer, going by the Glass Zoo images, or even the Ebay linked items.  The shaping looks about right, white paws, face all look pretty good, but the colour is wrong.  But maybe there were boxers made in grey like yours - ???  Hmmm.

[Wasn't there once talk of an ex-Pirelli worker joining the GMB - did that never happen?]

Re fish - not Pirelli IMHO.

ebay is never a good place for attributions, though it can be a starting point. All glass animals are either Murano or Pirelli. In reality most are neither.

You don't need a credit card to join the Glass Zoo. You can proably pay by Paypal

Thanks Christine and Nancy. Loks like a minor expense. If I can pay by Paypal.

This animal is good. it is anatomically very good. Eyes are level, ears are similar size ...

Sorry for coming in so late on this - that's just me.
If you are still interested, here are some pointers. Pirelli made statuettes (as they called them) in clear soda glass for about the first ten years of operation, almost always with coloured eyes, ears and tail and often a coloured nose. It isn't true that all Pirelli figures have eyes with two colours, but most do. The boxer dog was not included in the 1959 catalogue. It is a later addition and is usually a sitting figure in brown glass with white paws and a red tongue. Scavo's boxer dog doesn't have the coloured ears nor tail. Its a lovely piece but not, I think, Pirelli.

You cannot join at the moment... be back soon (ish)

But that is the Pirelli boxer... if not made at Pirelli it is definitely by one of their workers that carried on making lampwork.

Is fish solid or hollow? Not Pirelli.

Later information to my earlier post. Pirelli did make a grey boxer dog in the later years and this looks like one of them. The fish is not Pirelli.

Could the fish possibly be Bimini?
I think that's where Frank might have been heading with the question about weight.  :)

Its an attractive little fish, but not Bimini either. Have you looked at the Bimini examples in our London lampworkers book?
