Title: FOREIGN VASE ID HELP. - ID = VEB
Post by: PAUL H on February 02, 2009, 04:24:30 PM
Hi can anyone help with the id on this vase.. its 150mm in height and pressed in 2 pieces, it has a birdbath base
but I dont think its SKLO UNION not as nice quality. It has a circular mark embossed into base that reads FOREIGN
when read from above looking into the vase. My first thought was German maybe Lausitzer because I have a GENT
vase in the same colour.. any ideas thanks Paul.

Pamela's site shows this circular 'foreign' mark on Ankerglas Bernsdorf items http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/0marken/marken.html.

I have the same vase in flint/clear with the same stamp.

The stamp is identical to that on a Lausitz "Florenz" vase that I have.  I also recall seeing it on a large bowl that also has an SG sticker (made by VEB Sachsenglas at the old Walther factory).

So are we dealing with a generic DDR stamp here?

Christine and all: its not the vase that was identified I think, but the circular FOREIGN mark: undoubtedly Ankerglas Bernsdorf or VEB Ankerglas Bernsdorf. Saxony. I dive into my catalogues right now and let you know. If it's for sale - please let me know - thank you!

Guess, it's a PARIS of 1958 (VEB Ankerglas) I'm interested in a purchase for the museum :rn:

Hmmm

Sorry to rock the boat but, if it's purely a VEB Ankerglas stamp, then why is it on the other two pieces that I mentioned yesterday (Lausitzer "Florenz" and the Sachsenglas bowl?).

I know that VEB Lausitz and VEB SG had identical designs in their catalogues (Lyon, Verona, Brilliant, amongst others).  Were their moulds also used by VEB Ankerglas?  Or did the 3 VEBs just sell each others' products under their own labels?  Perhaps a way of making it seem as though there was more DDR product than there actually was?

The circular FOREIGN stamp may have been something that was applied to DDR vases being exported to the West -- although W. German pottery in the post-WW2 period was also just marked Foreign to conceal the fact of their being German.

...and I note that Pamela's Ankerglas Nova fish dish is also in the VEB Lausitzer 1969 catalogue   >:D
