Title: Makas '81
Post by: WillemB on March 24, 2006, 01:44:51 PM
Hi,
I've got some very beautiful eched and carved glass objects, which all are signed Makas '81.
One of those....
....and another one
          (http://www.botterweg.com/makas.jpg)
Could anyone help me to find out who he or she is and from which country ?
Thanks in advance,
Willem Botterweg
Amsterdam
Holland.

Hi Willem

What a fabulous piece of glass that is, I love that kind of thing.  I'd really like to see the other pieces you refer to.

I can't find anything under the name Makas - but I don't have a lot of information on engraved glass, to be honest.  :(   I see that you're in Holland, and this probably isn't much good to you, but this is the address of the Guild of Glass Engravers in the UK.

http://www.gge.org.uk/contact.html

I remember trying to contact them about a year ago - some of the numbers were out of date then.  :x  If you don't get any success here, then it's maybe an avenue you could try?

But still looking for the Makas guy who produced this big 7 kg. chunk of glass.
Actual sizes ca. 40x30x3 cm.
And Max (prev.prev.), thanks for the address of the UK Guild of Glass Engravers, will check it out.
Willem.

No, not at the Looier.
So far I first like to know who and where.

What is the size and thickness? What is the stand made from? Are the others in the same style, might be some cultural clues in the other designs. There is something familiar about this design, not on glass and not King Crimson.

Hi Frank,
Actual sizes ca. 40x30x3 cm and the weight of the glasspanel alone is about 7 kg.
The stand is handformed iron.
The other pieces I have are different in style, but definitely not turkish orientated, though Makan could be a turkish name.
Willem.

Hi Willem, now as you have written Makan I googled 'Makan sculpture' for you which led me here:

I did not look for glass there so far - good luck  :)

If it is Makan, it cannot be that one as only working since 2000.

Here is a lead that is promising:

catalogusnummer: 2166
Makas, vier schalen
met gegraveerde voorstellingen
[4]
l. 52 en 64 cm.
taxatie: € 60 - 100    opbrengst: € 140,00

Dutch auction house http://www.dezwaan-veilingen.nl/

Perhaps they know who the artist is, let us know if positive.

Frank,
That auctionhouse is where the items came from, and they don't know anything about Makas.
Nevertheless I will check again and let you all know if I find new data.
Thanks so far,
Willem.

As the only hits on the artist are in Holland and you got yours here, it seems probable that he works here.

Next step would be contacting the various glass galleries. In the UK there is a Crafts Council register in which you can get details of most artists' and crafts people, is there a similar organisation here?

There is an incredibly well documented and immensely helpful lady at the ministry of culture who can tell you at the drop of a hat if the artist features in any of her lists. I just wish I had kept her telephone number....
