Title: This IS a Paperweight -- as Marked (Hooray)
Post by: antiquerose123 on August 19, 2011, 01:26:24 PM
 :hi:

This is my last (new) topic to post today, or I will get my hands slapped for posting so many new things in 24 hours -- but GEE -- I am excited.   :chky:  Funny what glass does to a person.  Also since I purchased these all from a lady that used to live in the UK, I knew that you folks would know so much about these, as it is your *heritage* from where you are from there over-the-pond

So this one is marked and says Caithness Shimmer Scotland, but I know nothing about if there is a certain designer, or the age of it (year made)?   Anyone know?  Was there a series of Shimmer PW done?

((  Will this fade as it says to keep out of direct sunlight......as I never knew they could fade ??  ))

Again, I am  :rah: with my purchases, I  :X:

Hi Rose...'do not keep in direct sunlight' is a safelty warning.  My charred wooden windowsills are testament to that!!  The sun comes through the round glass and is magnified.....so the surface is scorched!!

Here is a picture of the said windowsill.....just to show you what it can do......I don't keep any round pieces on the sills now!

Thank You Ross  :kissy:

...and I love the *Bible* quote    I feel I have been Blessed now with this item, and the complete ID of it.  You folks are amazing!!  :ghug:

Thanks for the Super, complete Info !!  Perfect !!!

@ Rosie: WOW having PW sitting in the window did that much damage  :o :o :o

Good thing we have been talking about changing themes of a person glass display here on the board.  So hope that does not happen to anyone else.  How long did it take to do that damage?  Was it quite amount of time, or not much?  Just wondering.  Glad to see the photo posted as that is really interesting Info to know here on the Board -- and the exact damage that can be done.

Super to Post that Photo Rosie (but sorry for the damage that happened).. :fwr:

Amazingly, it all happened one morning....that's all....just for the few minutes that the sun was at that particular angle.
I had some lovely paperweight orbs with a mouse, an otter and a panda on.  They were on that windowsill with a couple of other rotund ones, and I was sitting writing notes and thought I could smell a singeing smell.........looked up and saw smoke drifting up from under the panda!!!!!   :o I was mesmerised for a moment, then I remembered that years ago, when John and I first married, we had bedroom curtains that drew across the bay window.
One morning I was lying awake and thought....oh there's a little flame like pattern on the curtain, how pretty.......and it is getting bigger......Shoot!....the curtains are on fire!!  :o
There was a magnifying mirror on the dressing table in the bay behind the curtain....the morning sun was bouncing off the magnifying side and reflecting onto the curtain!
I leapt up and Smacked my hands on the curtain to put the flame out.....John drowsily said....'Is everything alright my love?'  I said, 'Yes my dear, I was just putting a fire out', got back into bed and started to laugh.....

So, as soon as I remembered this little episode,  I got up and looked at the windowsill and saw that the same thing was happening!  Needless to say, I took them off the sill.  I sold the panda and the otter,  but I can't part with the mouse....he is too cute, and is a constant reminder to take care with glass orbs!!

Here endeth the lesson......talking of 'Bibles' !

No ... the rays are focused, not magnified! Ok - I'll take my pedant's hat off now. :wsh:

The time taken for scorch damage varies. Sometimes a single point of highly focused sunlight can burn a pinpoint hole into fabric quite quickly (could be less than a minute) but not make a longer scorch mark. Sometimes, it can set fire to fabric rather just make a hole! The quicker scorching would normally be when the sun is towards at its highest point and therefore (usually) hottest. But of course, the angle of the sun rays, the time of day and the different focussing power of parts of the glass object will all play a part in the outcome.

The horror stories of fires by paperweights sometimes reported in the media are more likely to be caused by the sun being focused onto a very flammable substance such as tissue paper - or maybe a match head! In most places away from the tropics, the normal damage to fabric or wood would be a scorch mark - but I did once notice a wavy line of smoke drifting up from the arm of my old sofa one day. :o

You are quite right Kev....where you a boy scout?

The point is, it doesn't take long for this to happen, andI it's quite scary when it does happen, isn't it Kev?
How did you put the fire out on the settee......a soda syphon?

I think it would be a good idea if the label said why you should'nt leave it in sunlight.

I once left about 30 paperweights on a plastic table in my conservatory for an hour or so, in bright sunshine. The antique weights or flatter modern weights caused no problem.  However, a couple of Mayauel Ward weights caused significant black burn marks. I only noticed after I picked one up, and burned the palm of my hand whilst looking at it! The shape of the weight (near spherical) combined with the design (mainly clear glass) was the cause of the problem.

I try to keep all paperweights out of direct sunlight: if you leave older Ysarts or Bohemians in sunlight, expect them to go purple more rapidly (due to precipitation of the manganese which was added to the batch to counteract the natural green colour from iron in the sand).

I could do an experiment and film it to prove the point, but I don't think John would be happy.......I'm still not forgiven for the burn marks we have got.....he thinks it was done on purpose 'cos I want new white windows! :o  As if.......... >:D
Mind you, I don't think we will ever get enough sunshine again to repeat the experiment!
