Rather like a squished Pwt. The central channel is not smooth bit has slight ridging rather like a bolt has been used to form it. I assume it to be some sort of placeholder but the groove seems too wide for good functionality.
Does anyone know what it is, and who designed it, at about what date?

Hi Ross, I wonder if it is a knife rest?
How big is it? If it is large, it might be a knife rest for a carving or serving knife.....just a thought.
-
It's probably just a paperweight and fairly modern.
-
Ross, my guess its a paperweight and pen rest combined ;D Handy thing!!

Hold it! - Strata (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1732&category_id=70&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6) is supposed to be a photograph holder - holding a photograph between 2 suitable glass plates or a perspex "folder" (don't know whether this was supplied by Caithness as well).
Ross - may I assume to have your permission (again) to use your images for Scottland's Glass?
-
Do you mean like this one Wuff?

Yes - and just click the link in my message to see the catalogue images, including the item "in action".
Best regards - Wolf

Doh! Sorry Wuff, I didn't realise that was a link........seen it now though! I like my links to be very long so it looks as though I have taken a lot of trouble!!
I didn't realise it was called Strata because it represented the stratered rock in Caithness, Scotland.......I like the other designs as well.
Looks like you found quite a little gem then Ross....yet again.

Thanks for clearing up the mystery, Wolf. You are very welcome to use whatever photos I post if it helps you in your work.

Thank you, Ross - this is appreciated ... and I will take you up on this: an excuse "April Fool's joke" will not be accepted :D!
