Title: Whitefriars paperweights date of production
Post by: BJB on April 10, 2007, 05:09:52 PM
Hi,

I have two paperwights one with pink swirls and bubbles the other with green streaks, they both have the grey label on the bases

I have looked them up and just wondered if 1980 was the only year they were made, or were they made any earlier?

All these Whietefriars weights with twist patterns were made by Ray Annenberg, it was what he called his Party Piece. Ray would take a handful of canes and lay them of the bench then he would take a gather of glass and pick the canes up. He would spin the iron and the canes would stretch into coloured patterns so no two weights could ever be the same. There are three designs Ray Used, the one illustrated is what I would call type one, type two was very similar but covered in a layer in tiny bubbles and type three had stretched bubbles around the base. Ray made these in the 1970's but I cannot be more precise than this

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for all the wonderful information.

I asked because having looked at the Whitefriars site the only catalogue I could see these in, to be sure that they were the same ones, was the 1980 one.

Please may I quote this when I re-list the weights? I am sure that if it was found that they are so individual a greater interest may be taken in them.

TBH I am not a big fan of the textured glass, I much prefer the 1930's and 40's Hogan and Wilson pieces, with the more delicate colours. I think that is why I was so drawn to these.
