Hi,

We are glass resarchers and need some insight on this nicely done bowl.

We know the history of Abels, Wasserberg & Co. (AWCO) which was the decorating company that painted this bowl and applied its Charleton brand label, but we don't know the glass manufacturer.

The YOP of the decoration was from 1941 to the end of the 1950s. Only slightly triangular in overall shape, the bowl is 8.5 cm (7.25 ") at the widest point at the top and is 14 cm (5.5 ") high at the highest point. The glass is 5 mm (3/16") thick throughout the sides. It has a ground base with a 13 mm (.5") smooth  deep depression (not polished) in the center this base. The ground base outer diameter is 7.3 cm (2.75") wide.

The decoration, which we believe to have been painted in AWCO's NYC studio, is one we have not seen before and is quite curious. It is painted in opposition on both the interior and exterior glass and fired nicely.

Although AWCO bought and decorated glass during this time period from many firms in America, they also boought goods from many European countries and we feel that this is a good candidate for one of those countries.

We would not be surprised to see the origin of this piece to be either Poland, Czecho, W. Germany, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

the shape screams Lütken for Holmegaard or Palmqvist for Orrefors - I believe they both pioneered similar triangular shapes in the 1940s. But be aware there are wannabees such as Bayel from France and Gullaskruv from Sweden. These shapes were popular throughout the fifties, and most manufacturers at some time had to follow the taste of the times.

Hi,

Thanks so much for the comments on the bowl. We have not found any reference for AWCO buying from Scandanavian countries (but with incomplete sales records you can never say never). I think the first place to look is in the direction of Bayel as they did buy items from France.

If I cannot find any info on the web I might pop back over and see if anyone has access to catalog reprints or a good book on the subject.
