I am looking through a catalogue for an auction we are going to shortly, and there are a couple of Nanny Still vases listed, nothing else mentioned. Now I had not heard of Nanny Still until reading about him (?) here so I have no feeling for the values and how much to bid. I'm floundering about on line comparing up values.... seems to be a very wide variation.
Am I right in thinking that as a rule of thumb the Riihimaen stuff is more valuable than the Riihimaki? And the tall straight stuff (Harlekin? is it?) most expensive?
Are there any markings on the base I should be looking for?
thanks for the quick master class.....
-
Hi Lynne,
Riihimaen and Riihimaki were one in the same company. It was situated in Riihikamki and was once called by the same name. It later became known as Riihimaen Lasi Oy.
Nanny Still is a lady, if you Google there is lots of info about her.
Harlekiini is a range, designed by Nanny Still and comanding great sums of money.
I loathe to say this, but take a look on ebay to get an idea of what the company made. Some is marked and some is not.
It seems as though Riihimaen pieces are becoming more and more collectable.
I have quite a few pieces as I love most of the stuff.
-
Nanny Still is a lady and yes, you're right about the Harlekiini range - it is pretty collectable (and commanding good prices). However, most of the Nanny Still vases I have are just your bog standard unsigned 'lantern' types that don't command big prices but are very decorative and come in nice bright colours.

-
I personally prefer Tamara Aladin designs (for the same company of course).

Great minds an' all, Pip.
-
My favourite is Helena Tynell.
-
thanks both,
I have indeed been wandering about ebay, Della, which is probably why I am so confused. I am finding prices from 4.99 through to 120, which seems rather a wide range for one designer. But it looks to me that the pure square Harlekiini are the ones making the money, and I wondered if it was just "ebay-itis" or a true summary of the desirability.
it doesn't help that ebay is just coming out of its summer slump, so lots of the pricing is uncharacteristic of the usual prices achieved.

Some Riihimaen bottoms for your consideration Jo. The concentric squares belong to a 'Kehra' Tamara Aladin vase. Although not all Riihimaen vases have this base detail, it certainly helps to pick some of them out when you're learning. :D
I've never seen a Riihimaen vase with this type of base signed, although I do have other pieces with plain, flat bases signed Lasi oy Riihimaen + the name of the designer. (from memory, they're in a box now I think)
-
Lynne, I didn't mean to look on ebay for a price reference. It is swings and rounabouts at the moment, with all kinds of sales.
I just meant to get an idea of shapes, colours, designers etc.
(I want your Kehra vase, Max  Have you seen what they are fetching, even with the slow summer sales?)
-
Thanks Max, that is very helpful. They haven't posted any pics of these supposed Nanny Still vases, so I am assuming they must be signed ones or they wouldn't know who they were by...
I'll probably find that they are completely different when I get there... :-(
-
They may well know who they are by without signatures. The designers are well documented although Tamara Aladin, Nanny Still and Helena Tynell are often mixed up by sellers on ebay.

Are they about £100 now Della? I started my collection about 3/4 years ago...prices were lower then. 8) I'm still hankering after a Pironki, Emma & similar, but I'm pretty short on shelf space. :x
Jo...best wishes at the auction. :D I hope the pieces are Nanny Still and not wrongly described. xx
-
I hate to tell you girls but I have two pironkies, three kehra vases and 3 aitanlukkos plus other assorted bits. Don't like Emma vases so never touch 'em. I'm in the process of collecting Siiroinen trains and have two at the moment.

Doncha love these fancy pants people with too much glass for their own good..... you'd think they would share it around a bit wouldn't you.

Oooh lovely Pat! :D :D I suppose I've kind of lost interest in that type of Scandi glass...although I still really like it, just not enough to spend any more money on. I've got a bit tight-fisted in me old age! Still - I bet they make a fabulous display - got any pics Pat?
I still yearn for a Pironki...ooh and Victoriana, I've only ever seen one of those.

oooh sounds Fintastic - are you gonna post some piccies Pat? :D
-
I'll try but since we had the family moved back in some has had to go in boxes for the time being. I still have some out so will make an effort.
-
I have a Piironki vase, in red. I also have 2 Aurinkopullot, one in blue and one in uranium green, 2 Safari vases, a Siiroinen dice and others that I don't know the name of. :?
-
Tut. Everyone's got a Pironki except me!! I'm Pironki-less! :x
I'll stick a pic of most of my Scandi stuff up tomorrow. Some people will have seen it before, but it looks kind of cool together I think.
-
I've got a safari as well. Bought it this year from a little local antique fair ina village hall for £15. Lovely cinnamon colour. I love the uranium. One of my siiroinen trains is uranium as is the huge vase I posted on here months ago, designer unknown. I also have Tynell aurinkopullo's in uranium.
-
I haven't got one either Max and I've sold my better Scandi bits including my only Safari :-( but here's an old picture of some of my more basic Aladin/Still stuff though, I reckon it looks brilliant when it's all together...

The only Riihimaen I have of any vague note is two Kleopatra vases... Cheap quality Riihimaen doesn't often crop up in these parts, unfortunately.
-
Lynne, there are a fair few websites showing examples of Scandi glass including Riihimaki... some of them are in Glasslinks here: http://glasslinks.yobunny.org.uk/articles.php?lng=en&pg=40 - Tiina's Finnish Glass Art has some really nice Riihimaki examples (almost at the bottom of the Glasslinks list). Hope they're useful... good luck at the auction. :)

oooh lovely collection Pat ...

Yummy Pat, just yummy. I love the 'Aitanlukko' and the 'Rengas' vases :mrgreen:
-
Rengas????

The uranium vase with the green Kleopatra vase/jug.
this one (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/foxytanith/detail?.dir=e285&.dnm=5080re2.jpg&.src=ph)
-
Now I'm curious. Is Rengas the vase or the colour? I put this pic up of the yellow vase ages ago and no-one knew who it was by but we thought Tamara Aladin. It is spectacular and it cost me an awful lot of money but I could not resist it. Never seen another like it since.
-
It is called Rengas and is designed by Tamara Aladin ca 1972.
 I am sorry, I didn't see your previous post or I would have answered.
-
Ah Della Thank you so much, This has been a mystery to me for months. Now solved.
-
I'll get mine out too :D I've got a Graponnia bowl, an unknown bowl see here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3690.0.html)
and a large Pala all in uranium, of course

I'm an avid collector of Finnish glass in my favorite color. Since the photo upload is on the fritz I hope this link to my yahoo album works. Some of the photo are of other types of vaseline so bear with me.

GlassGallery is working again - has been doing all day. :)
-
Vecila,
Your link is requiring a log in, so can't see your glass.
I don't know who designed your bowl, Christine, sorry
-
Vecila, we can't see your photos as it requires a log-in. I suspect you're giving us the page URL rather than a direct link to the photo.
Try posting them on Anne's Glass Gallery:

Sorry about that. I will post when I return after vacation.
-
I've posted a similar pic to this before, so apologies for possibly boring folk. Those same people will remember the terrible trouble I had with the glass shelves and cowboy builders fitting them. I'm glad to say they've lasted and nothing's come crashing down...in fact, the shelves are so well fitted now, I think it'd take a sledgehammer to remove them.
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-3024
The ringed neck vases shown are candleholders and should really be displayed the other way up, as they have an indentation for candles in the base...but I prefer them upside down...
-
  Wow!! Max. Absolutely fabulous. I am incredibly jealous
