Does anyone know who may have made this vase? Thank you in advance.

Hi Sandra,
František Pečeny (candle wax vase).
I have 3 of these. You can tell that I like them.
-
It's a Candle Wax vase by František Peceny...
-
Snap!
-
Wow! You're both very fast! Thank you!
How old would it be? Are they still being made?
-
No idea of fixed production dates - my guess would be mid-60s/early-70s.
-
Thank you again.
-
Are there any variations of this design in tumblers?

Ooh, I don't know Tigger, but I like it.
Marcus will be the one to answer this question.
Sandra, I think they were made in the late 60's. So your guess would seem to be a good one.
-
Sandra, if you go to Marcus' web site:
http://www.sklounion.com
this will give you plenty of in-depth information on Czech glass.
-
Hi,
As every one is saying Frantisek Peceny, they are all correct.
If this is the vase, pattern number 20245, two sizes are known 20245/180mm and 20245/230mm.
This range was then further expanded to fruit bowl/plate and dessert set.
TC, yours is not a variant, but probably a completely different though similar design.
Sandra, rest assured they are no longer being made. Hermanova hut' is now only involved in fully automatic production of glass for the licensed trade. At this moment there is no knowledge of the moulds having been moved and put into production elsewhere.
Regards,
Marcus

My tumblers are probably recent, no wear at all. I was just using one for a drink when up came this post.
I've got two left now, I did have six.
-
TC,
Before you lose the other two,
please send me an image of the base?
Thanks and regards,
Marcus
-
David, thanks for the link. I've added it to my Favorites.
Marcus..you've done a great job with your sight. I found it very informative & well laid out.
-
No grinding, polishing and no pontil. Flat as a pancake too.

Fidenza? :o

Hi TC,
I'm checking this, with the seller, as it may be a mistake, and/or correction from elsewhere (ie another description). We are aware of at least one vase, frequently appearing as Sklo Union, which is also known to carry the Fidenza mark.

Marcus

TC your tumbler looks like the 'Mesi' tumblers designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala (1966-85) ...
-
Tigger - not quite the same - but almost....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270083450064
- marked Italy on base.
Apologies for long link - bit rushed ;D

Really, um, I guess I'll have to take more care of my glass in the future. ;D
Thanks for the help again. 8)

Thanks, I've got one of those Fidenza vases someware. I just came across it while I was looking for orange coloured vases in the Italian section. I was very surprised to find that the ebay listing had a description of an Italy mark though.

That's the link that I posted. :)

Small world. Just bought 2 of the vases this morning - nothing written on the bottom - and already had 2 of the tumblers. Went onto ebay to see what a "Mesi" tumbler looked like...........and found this in the completed 300074375835 which is not like mine. Luckily someone had a live listing as well and they are the same which is great as I now have names for 4 more bits.
I LOVE this site!

Hi Catshome,
Would you be so kind as to post a link to an image of your tumblers, please?
Thanks,
Marcus
-
Hi Marcus - with pleasure. I hadn't posted a picture as they are the same as the link posted earlier. Cat

Thanks Cat,
I have not yet pinned these tumblers down. The contemporary images of both the vases, and dessert set in the "candle-wax" pattern, do not show a matching range of tumblers. Leave me with it....... I may have more to add at the end of the month.
Regards,
Marcus

Hi (again) Marcus,
Being able to hold both the vase and the tumbler I can say 99% certain they are from very different places. I thought the tumblers would be someone like Iittala, so I was unsurprised to see these on ebay 220078162918. I'm going to email the seller and see if I can get his source of information on them.
Is it the vase you're still checking? I think your website is fab and have bookmarked it for a future visit when I have a bit more time to browse.

I missed Pip's reply #17. Pip, can you let us know where you found the info about the "Mesi" pattern please.........it looks as though I need another book! Thanks Cat

Yesterday, I bought a vase that looked very like a Sklo Union 'candle wax' vase, but had 'Italy' marked on the base - well hidden on the inside rim, so that I only found it by feel.
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5411
Does anyone know who might have made these? Is this another Fidenza copy? Are the copies always marked?
Also, I note that the base on my vase is exactly the same as the one pictured on Della's vases here - no grinding and with that strange double rim. Could hers be Italian, too?
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5184.msg42654.html#msg42654
Thanks in advance.

Hi Cathy,
I have never actually studied the bases of mine, until you posted this thread. I actually have 4 of these vases and have just had them all up-side-down on the table.
None of them have the word Italy anywhere, but, 2 of the bases are decidedly hollow and 2 of them are hollow towards the rim, raising slighlty towards the centre. You can actually see the concavity through the side of the vases of the 2 with the hollow dip, but not on the other 2.
I am now very curious. :-\
-
I just spotted this candle wax vase on eBay... what on earth have they done to it? :o

I had been alerted to this earlier this week. Not original, amd painted with glass paints in the recent past.

Thanks Marcus, I'd come to the same conclusion - glass spray paint perhaps! ;D

I just found some identical tumblers to these. Wondering if anybody ever came up with any information on them.
-
The tumblers are from Durobor, the Belgian giant. I've always presumed that they were one of the many copies of "Mesi," but not nearly as nice. The key differences are the base and the weight. "Mesi" are light, with a clear, thin base. The Durobor have a chunky base.

Thank you so much David. Much appreciated!

Just spotted a set of the Durobor glasses on ebay - pattern name is Alaska. Have emailed the seller to ask for permission to post their picture of the image on the box on here for posterity.

Thanks, i must have missed this post. :)

Thanks to the seller, Ann at Teahousetreasures, for permission to post a picture from her listing 370258660066 on ebay.

Thanks, Cat. Perhaps we'll now see the end of "Alaska" being sold as "Mesi."
