Title: Very unusual Old English Inkwell (Bachus?)

Another one I cannot trace for sure, in the 2 books I have by Robert Hall I see similar canes in weights by Bachus and also the base style with the slight stepped section seems right?  But this style of inkwell I cannot find anywhere, has anyone seen one before?

The only Inkwells I have seen like this are usually Ink bottles that have been damaged and the top section cut off.

Hi Nick

Roy is spot on - it is an inkwell that has had the neck broken, before being ground and polished.  The maker is not Bacchus - it is an unknown Englsih maker, and these are typical canes.  The bottle would have had a stopper with one large millefiori cane in it.  I call these 'Old English 2 Group', and if you check the  Old English ID page  (http://www.pwts.co.uk/pages/OE%20Identification.htm) of my website you can see both a bottle and paperweights from this maker.

Regarding Bob's books, his Old English book is the best around, but the content is now around 20 years out of date, and contains quite a few errors, so use it with care.  In my opinion about a quarter of the weights attributed to Bacchus are from  other manufacturers.  For example, he does not distinguish between two very different Queen's Head canes, only one of which is found in Bacchus weights - he tends to assume any Queen's Head cane means a Bacchus attribution, when the reverse is nearer the truth.

Thanks Roy & Alan, I did wonder originally if it was cut down, but it is pretty large at 90mm across so thought it would have been a pretty substantial bottle if that's what it was. Also there is considerable wear to the inside of the well as if many nibs have scrathed across it so thought it may have been as originally made like this. Alan I'llbear that in mind about Robert's book.

I seem to have obtained a series of puzzle items recently and have a couple mor eI'll have to post I think as I'm struggling to identify them.
