Ray — I have seen that mark before somewhere.   Indeed I am fairly certain it was on a piece of glass I have had through my hands.   I am surprised that I could not find the mark in any of the obvious on-line references.

Ray — with help from above, I've found it.   See http://www.glass.co.nz/gibruby.htm and http://www.gibraltar-crystal.com

It's easy when you know the right search words!   I remember now finding it then with the help of my 1953 Stanley Gibbons Part I.   No reference collection should be without one — a great source for dates, flags, major events, etc.

The Exeter assay office mark was a similar castle but not quite so elaborate — yes, I looked it up!
