Title: Royal Brierley Studio topic
Post by: keith on December 16, 2009, 04:24:53 PM
10 inches high, unsigned, has 'wrinkles' under the rim,no damage and more 'wrinkles' on the surface as though part of the process didn't go according to plan, would this be a second?Keith.

Shape and decoration look fine, just read a page in a Millers collectables book with a cased example, they were made, just not that many.

John

Keith, the only reason to get out more is to buy even more glass. :D

I didn't and wouldn't had it not been signed on the base.

Well done TC,how did you find that? the pic' of the base isn't to clear but just like the standard RB studio mark.

one of those Harris designed pieces then, is it?  -   I'd have gone through many factories before getting to R/Brierley.    One for me to look out for as I do collect the Studio Range.      Well done Keith, and top marks for TC for getting the brownie points

Although nowhere near the same, there was something about the pattern that reminded me of a Royal Brierley Constance Spry vase that i have, and also you posted some of those a while back on here so i knew you collected it.

It has recently come to my attention that there is a lot more to the RB Studio range than just the specific Harris' design.

I keep seeing variations of the white 'studio' pieces, just how many were made, here are some of my white ones, are there records for RB somewhere?
Title: Re: Do you recognise this? puzzle time.
Post by: chopin-liszt on March 18, 2012, 05:01:29 PM
This vase has a label, and isn't a Harris design, as far as I know.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Royal-Brierley-Studio-Art-Glass-Vase-/330700472362?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item4cff48c02a

There is another surface textured style, I believe it's called "Terrazzo". I have tracked this down as a friend has a piece, then I saw a similar design of vase on ebay, boxed and labelled - with the pattern name on the box. I do have pics, but they're not mine to show. sorry.

I've seen quite a few of these in vase and bowl form but not to keen on them, I suppose I'll have to get one as part of the collection ::)

nice pieces Keith - and thanks to Sue for some information about which I knew rather little.     I have a personal mental description of these Harris pieces - and in my mind (perhaps wrongly) think of their surface decoration as looking rather like a sort of 'vermiculite' patterning.   I have pieces from the 'Studio' range in white, red, and that rather iridescent black  -  as far as I know I'm certainly missing the blue ish sort of violet they did.     And of course, each colour was produced in several different shapes.

I had a turquoise iridescent Royal Brierley Studio bowl in exactly that shape - I slightly regret selling it as it's a very contemporary shape compared to most of their iridescent range.

When do you think this dates to Keith?  any ideas?  It reminds me of the 'Dale Tiffany' pieces with that pulled spatter effect (although the red when you look closely, is classic Royal Brierley studio iridescent surface effect isn't it?) and also a Heron glass lampshade I had with similar effect but in black not white.  Both of which are much later in date I would think, than this vase?

I know they were still going in 1986,when they stopped manufacture I'd have to check,I'm sure someone here could tell us,this piece does differ from the 'classic' pieces and I presume it might be later production, then again ::)pic's to compare ;D ;D.Then again there are quite a few variations in the 'studio' range.

I love that bowl shape.  I made a regretful mistake when I first started selling some of my glass, and sold one that shape in a stunning Turquoise iridescence.  I rarely see that shape come up .  I do still have one red piece in the vase shape but not very big.  Their red and orange were beautiful and intense colours.

Sorry, just being silly.I've been trying to find more about RB'y but without much success but came across another possible puzzle,on page 361 of '20th Century B. Glass' bottom pic' far left,a small (Caithness )vase using powdered enamels to create textures, this looks very similar to a piece I have with a RB sticker ???,so did the label jump?
Title: Royal Brierley vase with spatters/surface texture and iridescence
Post by: flying free on July 07, 2012, 11:46:36 PM
aha! and that looks VERY similar to two little textured vases I had.  One is now sold, the other I still have and it came with a Hartley Wood giftware label. I subsequently found another on ebay and the owner said it had been bought at Hartley wood before it closed, so I feel fairly confident the one I still have is a Hartley wood piece.  I wonder if they all started jobbing out these little surface textured vases at a similar time to compete with each other?
Sorry I didn't mean to change the title  I don't know how that happened. And I couldn't face typing it all again :-[

Now I'm worried, here's the label on this piece and another I got recently, could this be a 'not really a Royal Brierley' ? :o :o
Title: Re: Royal Brierley Studio, another variation.
Post by: flying free on July 08, 2012, 12:21:42 PM
The red trailed one or one very similar was seen on the Style and Design website with an attribution of possibly STevens and Williams or Orrefors if I recall.  I'm not sure how they got their attribution but I think your labelled one clinched it as RB.
I'm not sure what the significance is of the different labels but I would think the trailed one would be an earlier piece.  I wonder if they, or at least some of them, fall under Royal Brierley and not Royal Brierley Studio.  It's quite confusing from what I recall reading, there were two 'Studios' somehow.  I'll need to go and look the info up again but I think it is in CH 20th Century British Glass?

Just for future reference, I can't find a picture to depict my description but I saw a marked and labelled Royal Brierley bowl with box at the weekend - that transparent browny amber colour glass with spatters or splashes of darker brown medium sized splotches at the base and slightly up the sides (bit like leopard print if you know what I mean) - I thought it was hideous so couldn't bring myself to buy it even as an example.

Weird coincidence Keith, I saw a small vase with the same decor (different shape I think) on Monday. I had not seen one before, it was unmarked and  the seller said it was Royal Brierly - she knew because she came from Stourbridge.

She was spot on then. 8)

No, and it's gorgeous - is that a trial piece maybe?
I only have a couple of bits somewhere now.

I had a beautiful Heron glass yellow vase that I sold.  I regret it slightly.  Their yellow iridescent glass was gorgeous and very thick and heavy compared to their other colours.

I have had a yellow RB studio lamp base, but it's not the Harris design, it's sort of got white speckly bits in.
Sorry, I gave it to somebody, so no pics.
I also saw a large yellow and white globe vase in a Charity shop last week, in the Harris design. It had a lot of fairly big white patches on it, not nearly as attractive as the piece you are showing here.

I think the colours get stretched too much in large pieces, so I'm afraid I left it behind. That, and the fact that it had a big footprint and Michael would throw a wobbly....

Well Keith here are three bits from my collection.  The fourth is a red pwt which I assume is the same as yours.

#1  Dark iridescent very close to spherical.

#2  Lovely light grey, pearlescent, splotchy glaze - similar shape to one of yours.

#3  A crystal "rose bowl"

I did, but I'm not sure it was Studio. It may have been a slightly older design I think, with threads of glass spotted on the outside. There was a surface texture - of both white and yellow glass.
I don't have it any more and have lost contact with the person I gave it to.

The antique shop in Lye has a piece i think is Brierley studio, well worth a look if your a collector, it's a beauty and only 25 quid, a flared pink swirled bowl

5 inches in height and 4 inches at the widest diameter.

A couple more Brierley pieces that were taken out the back door, i'm not sure ever put into production or you have seen them before Keith, a small neodymium vase, 4 3/4 inches in height and a series of goblets and a matching decanter in the same cut too expensive to produce at the time, the goblet is 7 inches in height.

Can now add a little more , it seems RB'y produced more than I thought, with thanks to David for putting me in touch with Charles Hajdamach who sent me images from a catalogue that shows they produced a dressing table set and a number of table lamps, seven new shapes in all and now have names for a number of pieces. Today I got a standard vase  that came with a box and small leaflet advertising the 'Samba' range ( see image ) of which this is one of 14 ! including a carafe, bowls, bud vases and wine glasses, it seems I have a way to go to get them all !  ::) ;D ;D

More information found today, early on Mark Hill spoke about a vase produced by the Harris family in 1986, the dark iridescent 'gold' on blue/ purple colourway is called 'shadow' range. It now appears the 'Studio' range was started before this date with most of the designs by glass artist Gwyneth Newland ( now Ashcroft ) the research continues and there may be an exhibition of Royal Brierley Studio glass at the motorcycle museum this coming November, thanks to Mr Benson, ;D ;D if I can get organised  :o ::) ;D

Dear All,

I thought it was time to potentially add to the RB Studio parade.  :D

I have a number of pieces and add to them when I can. This one I've not seen before hence thought I share it.

So here goes, unsigned, 10cm tall, unusual shape however the colourway is fab. My eyes say a light mauve through to a light lilac ( thinned out ) graduated from top to bottom with a good surface finish at the top again thinning out and minimising to the base. Same base and top finishes to my other pieces.

Happy days.

With kind regards

Andrew

8 inches tall with Royal Brierley Crystal label on the base, same dimensions as the studio version in this shape.

Same shape piece but smaller, in an oil spot effect... 4" tall, 3" wide at its widest point. How many sizes was this shape made in, do we know?

Marked on the base Royal Brierley Studio.

Found it today in my favourite rummaging shop (not a charity shop.)

Feel free to use the pics Keith. :)

Thought I'd add these original drawings with a photo as I think most of these, without a label, would not be recognised as RB Studio, do have permission  ;D ;D

I think this one has Constance Spry mark, it's currently buried somewhere in one of my boxes, otherwise i'd take a better picture.
