Title: Turnmill Glassworks. (? London)
Post by: rosieposie on July 27, 2008, 02:20:32 PM
Hi Everyone, I have another conundrum......
I have a blue glass elephant, Opaque blue body, clear glass head, trunk up, very much in the Wedgwood style, hand engraved with 'Turnmill '89.'
The most I have been able to find out about Turnmill, is that it was a glassworks in London which is now closed ................does anybody have any more information on this glassworks, and if there is a Wedgwood link?

Turnmill Studio was founded in 1986 and operated at 64 Turnmill Street London EC1, From 1987-1989 it employed a number of ex-Wedgwood Glass blowers who had been made redundant when Caithness bought the Wedgwood Glass factory. This is why some of the repertoire was in the Wedgwood style, but in the case of the elephants, the trunks are different from Wedgwood ones and also the colours were generally different. They were all signed Turnmill Studio and dated, and most should have some initials as well.

Hi,
You could try asking Louis Thompson, as he used to work there.

Adam and Marcus you are a pair of teasers... I'm going to tell Rosie why you are chuckling!  >:D

Rosie, you might like to know that aa who replied to you about the Turnmill Studio is Adam Aaronson, glassmaker, who actually owned and ran Turnmill Studio.

See also elsewhere on the board about Turnmill: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,17068.0.html

Coo, haven't I been around for a long time!!?

I have just bought this lovely little glass octopus.  Made by Turnmill Studios in 1988, I thought this might be a good place to show it to you?? ;D

2.25" wide and a fraction over 2" high, it is a sweet little boy with a bubble in the middle of the tummy and eyes like the Wedgwood owls....ground down.

aa and Marcus might be interested.

Frank if you would like pics for the Glass Zoo when you have the time to list them,  please ask.
