Title: BCM/Hailglass British made - I found something I would not have believed British
Post by: flying free on October 09, 2011, 01:05:11 PM
Just musing here on finding something interesting (well it is to me lol)
I was searching for something else and came across this marked lampshade (see link) for BCM Hailglass/British made.

http://www.tooveys.com/lots.asp?WEBLOTID=175559&LOTID=1416&AUCTIONID=

Had it not been marked I would never have said this was British but rather Bohemian or maybe German.
For future info in case the link disappears, the item is a white opaline lampshade with black enamelled hearts near the fitter rim and black enamelled (matted) silhouette type dancing fairies round the shade.
I'm curious, did BCM/Hailglass only make lampshades?

thanks Chris  :sun:  I'm off to have a much bigger trawl.  I love the lampshade and I'm now wondering about other items they may have produced similarly.

Also previously known as Ackroyd & Best besides Hailwood & Ackroyd may help your search.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to be allowed to take photos of the lampshade at Toovey's, so have good copies for later use. The chap who bought it also thought it unusual for British glass, being a collector of fairy silouettes on glass vessels, he expected it to be german or Austrian.......and a tad earlier in date.

There is a small piece of background info here, if you scroll down to the bottom -http://www.20thcentury-glass.org.uk/id65.html (http://www.20thcentury-glass.org.uk/id65.html)

Hi Nigel and m,  did you have a look at the catalogue/advertising page for 1937?

http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im19370917Elec-Hailwood.jpg#filehistory

Apparently they made the fittings also.
"We have the largest stocks of glassware to be found anywhere in Britain"
Branches/showrooms in all the major cities London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Belfast

Interesting snippet here... "Before the war German and Czech glass blowers employed there"

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/UK-MORLEY-FHG/2008-11/1227452218

Lastly, any the thoughts what BCM that precedes Hailglass stands for.

Chris — I thought that BCM HAILGLASS might be H&A's telegraph/telegram/telex address, from BeaCon Morley

My H&A lampshade has has different codes but the same lettering in the same font as the one that started this topic.   In addition to cold-painted enamel, not, I think, fired on, it also has a band of cold transfer decoration, again, I believe, not fired on.

Please be cautious about assuming that H&A made their advertising ashtray, a common type of assumption in all collecting spheres.   In Yorkshire both Wood Brothers and Bagley could have made and supplied that ashtray very cheaply, and I think it more than likely that one of the two did.   In the interests of accuracy I've said on this on my ashtray price and information ticket.   Another example — I recall a year or two ago coming across a collector who assumed that a specialist papermill had made their own office typing paper!!!

Finally, I love the information about the wrestler and the fascist sympathiser.   Brilliant.   ;D

Chris, thanks for the information  :)
What I need is one of those types of companies available now, so I can ring them and ask them to make the bits I need for my various shades that don't fit the various lamps I have  ::)
And I still keep buying them cos I can't resist....knowing that the chances of things matching are somewhat remote  ;D  - my oh is heartily sick of my lamp and shade buying over the years to say the least.

Bernard,

Your comments were taken on board (by me) last time you pointed out you're concerns. I think that you quite right to be wary, yet it should also be noted that both Ackroyd & Best, and Hailwood & Ackroyd produced shades that required moulds to make them. Maybe not such a leap, but the cautious approach is very sensible.

Have you any similar thoughts about their production of cut, and art glass that could be relevant?

Thanks, Nigel  :)

Hello All,

I've just been re-reading this thread because I needed to add something about my regular searches on the Internet for new mentions of anything to do with Hailware/Hailglass/Hailopal/Hailcris, etc. Consequently all the mentions so far I'm aware of, but thank you all for the help. Although, special thanks for Chris's reminder of the cranberry/ruby ash tray which I've now bought ;) :)

I noticed something that hadn't hit me before (apart froma typo):

Quote
Hi m  it's Hailware as in Halewood and Ackroyd.

Chris, that isn't right IMHO. It quite clearly says Hailglass, which, although from the same stable ain't the same thing as Hailware. Recent sight of adverts by Ackroyd and Best suggests that the two come from seperate eras of the same thing :)

A typo indeed Nigel, the reason I said Hailware and not Hailglass was because my search for Hailwood & Ackroyd   threw up about 6 items including a couple of lampshades like the one at Tooveys and described them thus ' Hailware' glass ceiling light so thinking maybe Lassco and the others maybe right and maybe Tooveys had slipped up  :-[

Not sure why it disappears  in the link it shows on the search? 7th one down on the google search

Chris,

If I wanted to be sarcastic then I would make sure you knew.....however I was merely referring to your spelling of Hailware - not Haleware as you put in your first post on this thread.

As for the information that I have just given in my last post about the difference between Hailglass and Hailware, I think you should understand that I have been researching this topic for some years and am in touch with the Hailwood family. The information I have given is hot-off-the-press. Perhaps I should leave inaccuracies, so that they proliferate for the future?

Nigel I'm not sure I understand your reply, although I know it wasn't directed at me.  I think Chris was just saying he was repeating what was in the Lassco ad and what they stated, and his embarrassed smiley was meant to indicate that  :)
Please don't leave inaccuracies - no one was questioning your information, Chris was just adding to the thread I thought from reading.
Chris, I can't tell from the Lassco ad why they would have used Hailware instead of Hailglass as they haven't put a pic of the writing as far as I could see, but the Tooveys lightshade I linked to clearly has written on it Hailglass, so given they are the same shade, I would think as I think you did, that Lassco probably got it wrong.
The gorgeous lights you linked to are marked Hailware.  So perhaps both pieces as Nigel says, belong to different era's in their production.

Chris said in his first post:

Quote
Hi m  it's Hailware as in Halewood and Ackroyd.

No inaccuracies, just a spelling mistake that's been blown into something that's beyond me, since I referred to it as a typo in order to be polite. Then I get a disatribe of links that I wasn't questioning which is preceeded with:
Quote
A typo indeed Nigel
.

Maybe I'm being too damn sensitive.....................

Gosh Nigel, I'm terribly sorry, my misunderstanding of what you wrote, and I was simply trying to explain that Chris's links elucidated why he had used Hailware instead of Hailglass, which it appeared to me was being corrected in your response:

'I noticed something that hadn't hit me before (apart froma typo):

"Quote

My apologies for misunderstanding. :sun:

Thank you m that is exactly what I meant :sun: and they are exactly the same shade and presumably from the same era but one marked? Hailware and one marked? Hailglass, so hence my confusion.
Nigel you are hard work sometimes Lol and probably far too intelligent for me and quite difficult to 'read' :wsh: keep going over what I have written and honestly for the life of me cannot see a hint that I was suggesting you were being sarcastic in any shape or form.
regards and rest assured I am keeping a good eye out for you on my travels around Yorkshire for anything connected with H&A
Nigel the 'disatribe' of links were for m really and also to show the 2 lamps one described Hailware and one described Hailglass
A  typo indeed Nigel was just that!!!! in other words I was acknowledging you had spotted the typo
m I thought were spot on with your observation and IMHO said nothing you needed to apologise for and thank you for that.

Hmmm....looks like my self image needs a bit of re-writing :-[  And, I need to work on my communication skills!

My apologies Chris, and my thanks for your still looking.

Those Deco lamps are great, but note it is the metal that is marked, not the glass. Over the last 9 months several pieces of Art Deco looking metal and glass, under the trade name Hailware, has turned up. Fortunately, all are in the process of being recorded.
