Title: Bouquet paperweights at Jefferys
Post by: tropdevin on February 05, 2014, 01:45:15 PM

Hi.  Did anyone on GMB apart from me bid on the 'French paperweight' at Jefferys today (a rather clumsy bouquet on a spiral ground)? I concluded it was a poor example of an NEGC upright bouquet, as it appeared to be well off centre, and to have only 4 small buds around the central flower rather than the usual five.  But it sold for a hammer price of £450.00.  Was my ID wrong, or did someone think it was Pantin or something rare and French, perhaps?

Hi Alan

Must admit I'd seen it and thought it was either American or Bohemian but didn't like it enough to check further and so didn't bid.

I had though registered to bid on the interesting lot of 17 paperweights at Horners on Saturday then promptly forgot, logged on when I suddenly remembered an hour after the auction finished :'(

Hi Nick,
the Horners 17 paperweights went for an over the top £2700 plus commission to a telephone bidder. Horners charge 3% + VAT for telephone bids so the total must be somewhere around £3280. About £800 too much in my view having seen them in the "flesh".

Hi Tony

I could see there were some damaged ones there, and from the photos it was hard to judge how restorable they were,  were they actually that bad?

Hi Nick,
there were two Pansy weights...one had been so reground that it looked like the pansy was almost out of the glass. The other had a broken purple petal inside when it was made.

There were two weights that looked chinese to me...one obvious and the other less so ( the feint garland)

The large clichy with rose weight could be restored but needed a good deal of glass removed.

One of the St.Louis nosegays was only 3/4" across.

All the modern weights were fine.
