Post by: jakgene on September 24, 2010, 02:49:03 AM
can anyone help me to date this vase please.
signed to the base Kosta 47825-10 G.Warff.
quite a bit of wear to base.

it is 11 cm or 4.5 inches high, and almost the same diameter.
weighs in at 1128 grammes (about 2.5 pounds I think)
one of my favourite pieces!
thanks

He first designed for Kosta in 1964 and has designed for them on and off since (Kosta Boda now), so best I can do is say later than 1964.

Well, it's a start.... :pb:

Thanks John, "start" much appreciated.
I was hoping that the numbers meant something to someone who knows and might help date it, but perhaps not??

Assuming the numbers are used more or less in the date order this vase's number must be just pre 1986 since the Kosta Boda book of that year has a vase with a number just nine later than yours.  The best thing to do is to email Kosta Boda - I have been pleased with their prompt response.  You may find, as I have recently, that the query is handled through KB(USA).

I understood that the second and third number gave the year of the design, making this from 1978.

reply received from very helpful lady at Kosta Boda.

<<The vase was first made in 1978 and produced in Kosta. I have not access to catalogues form this year but I have a 1983 year catalogue and the vase is not included here so it must have been discontinued after a couple of years. I believe the name of the pattern was Venus, a beautiful piece, mouth blown in the Kosta blowing room.>>

Just to confuse things, just picked up a nice Warff piece, no 46194, its well worn to the base, but can it be 1961 ??
Im trying to find confirmation of Johns info, that he started in 1964 , cant seem to find any definite dates,
John, are you sure??
Cheers

1964 is the date for the Warffs joining that Kosta gives in "Kosta 250," the book the company produced on the history of Kosta. To make it stranger, the five figure production number, where the second and third number give the year of production, didn't start until 1974. "Swedish Glass Factories" by Ricke  has a Kosta catalogue for 1962-3 and it's all Lindstrand with the old numbering system.  In other words, I'm mystified.

I looked at "The Kosta Boda Book of Glass, 1986" which is the Kosta Boda catalogue for that year.  It shows Warff and other designs with codes for before 1974 ( for example, 26005, which is a table service designed in 1960), so the code must have been applied retroactively, that is, used on production pieces made in 1974 or later but designed before 1974.  Before joining Kosta, the Warffs designed for Pukeberg, which got in financial difficulties in the 1980's. I wonder if Kosta bought the rights to the designs or the rights went from Pukeberg to Kosta with the Warffs. I don't think the engraving is a forgery, which is the perhaps the more obvious alternative. So my guess is that 1961 is the correct year for the design, but not the manufacture.

Hi David,
thanks for your quick reply, that got the brain cells working!
It all sounds pretty believable to me.
Close enough for me anyway.
Many thanks , and seasons greetings

I am pretty sure I would have gleaned the date from either Fire and Sea or Smoke and Ice. The books also state that he designed for Pukeberg from 1959 to 1964.

Hello

Göran and his then wife Ann Wolff (Warff) left Pukeberg Glasbruk and joined Kosta as designers in 1964.
