Title: BAGLEY - Please ID
Post by: mkstudio on August 14, 2010, 08:25:27 PM
Hello,
I recently broke one of a pair of favorite frosted green vases, about 6" tall.
The style is very much like the Bagley vases in the Carnival pattern I've seen online, but the only ones I see are in vaseline glass, not frosted.
Has anyone here ever seen this vase in green frosted? (My photo was taken against a bright window making it look less green in the center, but the vase appears as all green in normal light, a similar color to the Bagley Grantham vase in frosted green.
I hope that looking for Bagely is the right direction.
Would appreciate any information about this.
Thanks very much.
Mara

Pattern is named Carnival made from 1946 to 1975. Source Bagley Glass by Angela Bowey, Derek and Betty Parsons

I must say I don't remember seeing a frosted one. Carnival is usually unfrosted, though the bowls sometimes come painted.

Me neither Christine. Angela Bowey says Carnival 3141 pattern is a celery vase, and was the only celery Bagley made in colours. I wonder if the frosted ones were for a specific customer?

Thanks for your replies.
I've looked and looked and now I can see why i may never find one in frosted green.
Hope something turns up. Would love to have another.
I appreciate your help!
Best,
Mara

By the way, I live in New York but bought my vase in a small shop in the UK (in Barnes) about ten years ago.
So I know that it's British!

The Bagley one has 18 ribs and is 6.5 inches. I think we agree yours is Bagley but we've never seen Carnival frosted.

Thanks Christine. Yes, 18 ribs and 6.5 inches, exactly. I hope to get lucky and find another.

Hi,
I'm sure you will find one eventually. It was sold as a celery vase in the 1950s because there was less tax on a celery vase than on a flower vase.  There was even a green crystopal version of the "Carnival" design, but I have never seen the vase in crystopal, only the fruit set. Some of the molds for this pattern were sold to a Czech company after Bagley's closed. The registration number for this design was 8491180 (for November 1946). I'd be interested if anybody has any pieces with the registration number marked.
All the best
Angela

Thanks Angela. I'm still looking online every week. I appreciate the registration number.
Can you please tell me what "crystopal" is?
Best,
Mara

Mara,

Crystopal was Bagley's blue and green "opal glass" introduced in 1947[ref page 20, Bagley Glass, by Angela Bowey and Derek & Betty Parsons] - there's an example of the blue on the Bagley book page here:
http://www.glass-time.com/orderbagleyglassbook.html - the bright blue pieces at the top left of the book cover are Crystopal.

There are more examples in the Wakefield Museums online collection here;
http://www.wakefieldmuseumcollections.org.uk/index.asp?page=item&filename=bagley.mdf&itemId=WAKGMP%20:%20P2002.309 and http://www.wakefieldmuseumcollections.org.uk/index.asp?page=item&filename=bagley.mdf&itemId=WAKGMP%20:%20P2005.10

It's fairly uncommon, especially in the blue I understand.

Hi angela

I am new to the forum so please excuse any errors - I have I believe most of the Bagley carnival set in green having just bought the last item ie cake stand. But I have several pieces with the 849118 reg on it. In fact i believe you bought the blue carnival butter dish off me a few years ago. Would you be interested in the blue cake stand to match ? Let me know. Regards Tracy

Just whilst I think of it, I picked up a blue carnival vase a couple of months ago, which has both the registered design number on the base and the word CELERY on the side, in raised lettering so it was cut into the mould. I'll try and get a picture done as I've not seen one like this before.

Hi Anne, Hi Tracey,
It would be good to see the vase with Celery on it on here, Anne.
And I am always pleased with my blue cheese dish in Carnival pattern, Tracey. I'm trying not to buy any more Bagley glass at the moment, apart from still looking for a pair of Kookaburra wall lights. But it would be nice to see a photograph of the blue cake stand.
All the best

Hi All,
Still looking. Bought a beautiful blue 3141 and two greens on Ebay. But still looking for a green frosted.
Would love to see the word CELERY on the side. So interesting.
Thanks for all of your information.

Bother! I'd forgotten I'd said I'll do this... sorry! I'll see what I can do later after I've finished the job in hand. :)

Have managed to do this now... the lettering is raised from the side of the vase on the outside.

Thanks very much for showing your blue vase with the raised letters.
How interesting! I wish mine had them (I have four, three green and a blue), but sadly they do not.

By the way, I noticed an interesting vase on ebay this week. A FROSTED green Bagley vase. Not the carnival celery vase, but an interesting Art Deco (not Grantham).
Thought you might want to take a look.

Hi,
There definitely were frosted glass versions of the Bagley Carnival pattern, so if you keep looking you should find one (probably on ebay). The Carnival pattern was made in a wide range of items including a fruit set, biscuit barrel, butter dish, cheese dish, sugar and creamer, and celery vase. The catalogue number is 3141 and the registration number for this pattern was 849118 (November 1946). Pieces have been found with the wrong registration number.

In the 1953 Bagley catalogue the Carnival vase (which was called a Celery Vase to avoid taxes) was offered in all the Bagley colours, both frosted and clear. Some Bagley Carnival pattern items have the registration number molded into the glass (849118) and sometimes they have the wrong registration number.

My collection includes an interesting Carnival pattern fruit dish in clear glass, frosted on the outside, and with red polka dots on the inside. Sadly I don't have a frosted green vase. But keep looking - you'll find one.
Best wishes
Angela
