Hiya,

Such little as I know is from meeting Barry at Covent Garden Market back in the late 70's where he occasionally used to sell pieces at the Saturday market.

The shape of the vase you have is typical of his work with opaque colouring to the rim and shoulder of the piece at that time. I bought a couple of drinking glasses from him as well as vases. The vases are far more competent than the glasses, which were heavy and far too think to drink from.  I remember discussing the problems of making stemware with him, which I seem to remember he found somewhat of a challenge. I also recall him being concerned at the difficulty in making a living at glass blowing. I'd say, some things just don't change do they?

Cheers, Nigel

I remembered reading this thread ages ago and I've just come across something related to this vase. On page 252 of Charles Hajdamach's 20th Century British Glass plate 528 there is an absolutely stupendous vase engraved by Peter Dreiser called 'The Price of Oil' - the vase has a dark shoulder neck and rim where the dark part goes further down the vase than the vase in this thread, and then is  paler from under the dark shoulder downwards.  The fish on the engraving are all in the paler section facing upwards trying to get through the globules of oil on the 'surface' i.e. the darker shoulder and neck of the vase.  The vase was blown by Barry Cullen, the whole piece is utterly fantastic imho - the combination of the blown and the engraved and the use of the colour.

Not related to this thread really...a little diversion but with the common link being the engraver,  I also think Peter Dreiser's 'Drowning of the Innocents' is a scarily impactful piece of glass (Blown by Neil Wilkin) - In both cases the blown piece in combination with the obviously incredible engraving, the impact of the message being imparted, they are perfection in terms of engraved glass for me.

I doubt anyone will get their hands on 'The Price of Oil' as it's in a collection that is unlikely ever to be broken up because of the way it has been formed, and it's role within museums. Wonderful thing to hold though ;) 8)

Unfortunately, us mere mortals are only ever likely to be able to own a piece of Peter's earlier work which was produced as 'bread and butter' by him. The commission pieces are really special, and a tad pricey if they ever come to the market!!

The Pice you are referring to is a closed neck form in to tone colourer and was made in my studio in Fulham and is singed Barry Cullen and has a stock number after 1983 and a galley piece not for the market stall at Covent Garden
this is simpler then the price of oil I was doing a series of closed neck forms to do with optics and colour
it nice to see it again thank you

Hello, and a huge welcome indeed, Barry!  :)

Thank-you so much for commenting and the extra information..

And thank you so much, for your part in "The Price of Oil".  It is a treasure which really should belong to the whole world.

(much as though I lust after being it's custodian for just a little while.... ::)  )

Hello Barry and welcome to the board  :)
Thanks for adding information on the beautiful vases.  It's interesting and much appreciated to us collectors to see the actual makers commenting on the pieces discussed here,  and to have extra information.

What a very pleasing surprise. I'd forgotten the thread (along with too much else!), so it was brilliant to find that you had dropped by Barry.

Thanks for the comments about your work.

Hope all is well with you.

The piece you are referring to is a closed neck form in two tone coloured and was made in my studio in Fulham and is signed Barry Cullen and has a stock number after 1983 and a gallery piece not for the market stall at Covent Garden.
This is a simpler piece than the Price of Oil.  I was doing a series of closed neck forms to do with optics and colour.

Thanks Barry !

I really feel very lucky to have found it ! It's so striking , I haven't ever seen glass looking so pink !

What was the engraved design on Madeleine's piece ? Are you still blowing glass at the moment ?

Cheers, Mike.

I'll lay odds on Flying-free is desperate to know about the engraved one too. ;)

I'm not fond of pink or white; and especially not together - but this piece stands out - it is artistically powerful enough to overcome any "sweetieness" and I do like it, very much.

That photo doesn't do "The Price of Oil" much justice... it looks far better "straight on" than from an angle above, but you're right, Mike  :) we should have an image of it here.

I do find myself wondering if the photographer wanted to disguise the highly significant message of this work - that the fish are all suffocating and dying...

I'd be really interested to find out a bit about how the engraver collaberates with the glassmaker to produce such amazing final works.

The glass itself is so important - it must merge with, suggest and illustrate the design before it is finally put on.
I know that Allister Malcolm makes "blanks" for Jonathan Harris, and that Jane Charles makes "blanks" for Julia Linstead.

I find myself looking more and more at the work in the blank, behind the surface work these days.

It's a very interesting example of a symbiotic relationship between two artists and I can't think of any other area of the fine arts where this happens  ;)
Title: Re: Studio art glass vase help with signature
Post by: chopin-liszt on March 13, 2013, 11:30:13 AM
Yes, I do agree - but how often does the glassmaker get the credit they deserve for it?

It's always the engraver - the cold glass artist. The one who draws lines on it.

Not the one who battles to work with and control huge weights of 1000 degree celcius molten syrup!
Title: Re: Studio art glass vase help with signature
Post by: Baked_Beans on March 13, 2013, 06:09:32 PM
Absolutely !

The last thing (I would imagine) a glass artist would be thinking about , whilst grappling with molten glass syrup , is a symbiotic relationship with a glass engraver .   :)

In Peter Dreiser's book it would have been really informative to know who created the form and colour of his work.

I love the engraved piece - thanks for sharing :)

I agree with the recent comments - I like to know who made the blank and who decorated the glass.

For more recent contemporary glass, the blower and and the decorator are now usually credited.

I have to say though, I am finding the more interesting antique pieces I'm researching are the ones where I have two lines of enquiry :) i.e. the decorator and the maker of the blank.

I think you put a wrong link in by accident Wolkenreb?

Barry, the board is a mixed board and from what I see it comprises people who are interested in and love glass.  Many are collectors, some are dealers, some collect and have to sell as well otherwise they'd not be able to continue collecting (me :)  ).  But all contribute to the board knowledge in various ways and to the good of glass reference/accurate history (at least in my opinion).

Glass on ebay finds it's current price the same as any auction.  If two people want something badly it will sell well.  If only one person wants it and the start price isn't very high, then it will sell for the base start price.  That is the way of an auction I guess.

It also goes in and out of fashion and desirability very quickly from what I can see.  And in order for something to be desirable to many, many must know about it.  That's why marketing is so important :)

I recently contacted the publishers of 'Techniques of Glass Engraving' (second edition) by Peter Dreiser & Jonathan Matcham, 2006, ISBN 10 07136 75160 , ISBN 13 978 0713675160, A & C Black (Publishing) Limited / Bloomsbury Publishing . They very kindly gave me permission to take a photo of a photograph printed in the book on page 93 and publish it here on Glassmessages.com . The photo is of 'Acid Rain' engraved by Peter Dreiser, 1986 , 20cm high vase. The original photo in the book was taken by Peter Dreiser himself. For any further publication of this photo you would need to ask the permission of Bloomsbury Publishing here......

http://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/company/permissions/

As 'Acid Rain' is clearly related to 'The Price of Oil' and it has been quoted above (by me!), I thought it would be a good idea to show it here. As far as I know it's the only image of this vase on the internet (but I could be wrong here).

At the base there are the skeletal remains of fish .
