Post by: BRADBURY7308 on April 26, 2009, 08:56:57 AM
A lovely little green frosted bowl, looks like uranium with fish and slithers of water plants going around it its four square sides. No marks at all.
Thought it might be bagley? 5"- diameter and 3"- height any help with the maker or model greatly appreciated...

I've looked thru Anne's trinket sets and some of the Bagley information on the Wakefield Museum site, but no joy.    I does look as tho it cud have some possible likeness to Anne's Mystery Set No. 39  -  same sort to semi naked water nymph, and similar sort of etched Bagley matt surface  -  but I think I'm just clutching at mermaids, although I am convinced it must be part of a trinket set.    It is of course Uranium and glows well under the torch  -  about 10 cms. high and 9 cms. wide.   Any help much appreciated and thanks for looking.   Paul S.

Auguste Walther & Sohne and yes the small lidded bowl of a trinket set. Should be on Pamela's site.

Bagley uranium always veers towards a blueish green. Walther uranium comes in a yellowish green and a not quite so yellowish green. The mermaids are the yellowish green. Brockwitz is very pale green. Sowerby and Jobling (not the jade) are yellowish green. These are, of course, only pointers and it may depend on how good your colour discrimination is. You may need to ask a woman  :24:

sincere thanks to both of you - and guess I must be improving a little bit in view of the fact that I got as far as linking it with Anne's Mystery set no. 39 (with which it does match of course)  -  well at least Anne now now has a little more info. for her data on the trinkets.   And as usual a word of thanks to Pamela for her wonderful comrehensive site.    cheers       Paul S.

No it doesn't match mystery 39. These mermaids are different and still a mystery

Anne has Walther Nymphen here,

Paul — I have put up on GlassGallery (click main image to enlarge — click thumbnail to change image), a few images of the full 7-piece Walther Nymphen trinket set in the same acid-matted uranium green as your box.   Yours is the smaller of the two sizes of trinket box.

I have seen the Walther Nymphen sets come with both these candlesticks, the base of mystery one is a far better match to the rim of the tray of the set. Maybe they just altered the design as time went on?
Title: Walther frosted or satin finishes??
Post by: Simba on August 03, 2015, 04:54:35 PM
I have recently bought a blue Nymphen trinket set which had a ring dish missing ...I was lucky to find one in a flea market locally I was surprised to find that the main trinket set is a normal Walther satin finish but my ring dish is a frosted finish... I have asked Anne's opinion so she is already on the track of this but just wondered if anyone else had any ideas on this 'frosted' piece, was it a later finish or is it a copy. As you can clearly see from the second pic it stands out from the rest, I have compared it to some frosted/satin flint glass and it is definitely blue.   ???

Frosted and satin are the same. It's the base glass that is a different shade of blue. Was Nymphen made by VEB Saschenglas post-war? If so, your answer may lie there. Walther actually had two different shades of uranium green; one is yellowish and one veers towards bluish

Yes I know technically they are the same terms but what I mean is the main trinket set is satin (soft to the touch) whereas the ring dish is more frosty or rough to the touch, like sand blasted...if that makes any sense....two entirely different finishes.  ;D

In that case it probably is sand blasted; the standard Walther finish is acid etched. You can often see where the "painter" has missed tiny areas. VEB Sachsenglas certainly made the Nymphen tray...

Christine, thanks for your thoughts on this. It had me puzzled!

Angela, there is now a blue frosted Nymphen ringholder on GTS - one of Eugénie's magnificent collection - here: http://www.glasstrinketsets.com/cms3/german/walther/nymphen for colour comparison...
