Can anyone help me to identify this paperweight. It has a ground pintil and I have owned it about 15 years (bought from a boot fair).
Cheers

Looks like one of the highland clan to me,Strathearn maybe?

At first sight it does look Scottish - but I am sure there are various Whitefriars canes in the design.
One possibility is that it was made by Alistair Ross at Pairpoint (USA). I have two of his weights that use Whitefriars canes (he got them, some Perthshire canes and others when visiting the UK). All very confusing when trying to ID weights!

Definitely whitefriar canes. I have one very similar - I am not sure if it has a monk cane or not, but I have always thought that it looked odd compared to the usual Whitefriar. I will look when I get home from work. Be interesting to know if this one has the whitefriars ridge on the base aswell as the ground out pontil (which if that is the 1 inch shallow dish is also a whitefriar indicator)

Yes there is a distinct ridge in the base and the polished pontil sits in the centre of it. It is very well finished. Does that help?

A picture would help even more ;)

I'll get my slave onto it right away :24:

OK I think my photo slave (22 year old son) did a good job but maybe that's cos I know what the bottom looks like. Very difficult to show the ridge and pontil.
What do you think?

If I'd added the photo it might have helped!!!

Please ignore my previous post I'm a numbskull when it comes to pwt's,
Keith.

Any more ideas? Is it WF?

Here's pictures of mine. Pretty similar. Mine has no signature cane. The base treatment with ridge and button, the profile and the canes all scream whitefriar. I have others with similar lattice canes that are signed.

Oh my gosh ... they are rather alike aren't they.

I think you should keep the slave, at least for now.

If I had a slave who could photograph my bottom so well, and make it look attractive, I'd certainly keep him. And probably raise his salary! ;D

Would you post it here though :chky:

Next year's calendar :o ;)

If its W/Fs the canes should be set on a button of glass then the clear ball of glass is set over it so from the base you should see a clear outer layer around the button .

Hi
My vote is for Whitefriars having now seen the bottom. I do not believe the maker at Pairpoint used the button technique even though he used Whitefriars canes.

This has been an interesting and educational thread. Annie found a little treasure at a boot sale years ago and now she is able to enjoy it in a new way. Isn't it great to get to the bottom of things!
