Title: Help to ID Kookaburra Bowl with makers mark please! - ID = STS Abel, Yugoslavia
Post by: cmdg on May 09, 2011, 10:38:12 AM
Hello, I recently bought this lovely footed glass bowl that has what I think are kookaburras as handles. The bowl stands at 5 1/2" tall, and 9 1/4" across the top, it is pressed glass and has the moulded makers mark to the underside.
I would appreciate any information about it,particularly the maker, date and possible value. The only other example I have seen was in a purple malachite type glass and looked to be smaller but the same shape etc, there was no information given, just a sold price of £120 !, any other glass I have seen with kookaburras all are in carnival glass.
Thank you very much,Chris
P.S.I paid £2.50 at a local car boot.

Hi Chris, your bowl was made in Yugoslavia by STS Abel, see Pamela's site here: [Link (http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/02852.html)]

Definitely not Kookaburras.  Kookas are LARGE kingfishers and this have a straight upper part to the beek.

It's a lovely coincidence - look, what I have received today from Dejan, a 'Serbian-glass-investigating' friend:

quote
Hi Pamela
I have a full confirmation that STS Abel use mark with star and wineglass. I wrote message to museum of Hrastnik and I asked him about the mark. The curator from the museum Irena Ivančić Lebar confirmed that.
Star with five point symbolizes a five glass factories (Hrastnik, Rogatec, RogaÅ¡ka Slatina, Daruvar und Paraćin). It is not known exactly when the mark use began. Certainly after 1927. when all factories are united. RogaÅ¡ka Slatina glassfactory was built in 1927. and in the same year Abel purchased a factory in Paracin. Mark was used to approximately 1945.

I have also a interesting advertisement from glassfactory in Hrastnik published in magazin Steklar and I send you in this message.

Angela has already written in detail about STS here: http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/STSglass.html
I had already informed Angela about this new contact a few weeks ago, and now it seems, we're getting closer to their history.  :chky:

Anyhow, I'm delighted about this contact to Serbia, and have invited Dejan to join us here  :rah:

Well Chris,
I am exceedingly envious
I have been trying for sometime to obtain that bowl at the right price.
I might have even paid a little more!!

Well Done.
Meegs.

That was some coincidence eh!!.
Ah, so not a kookaburra then, it reminds me of those weird pottery birds by the Martin brothers, a crazy bird.Is it a mythical bird or maybe a kingfisher or something else?.
It has been great to learn something about this maker,I've really enjoyed looking through lots of the links to old catalogues etc,and learning some history about the five factories uniting etc.
So it seems that my centerpiece must date between 1927 and 1941, I think I read that the outbreak of the WWII ended production,I am still a little uncertain about when exactly this star and wine glass symbol was in use?
Meegs,do you know what it should be sold for,or would trying ebay be worthwhile do you think?,I don't have a lot of experience with selling pressed glass from this period (Stennett-Willson is my main glass passion!) it is a shame to part with it really, the colour is particularly good, I just have so much glass I can't keep it all,as it is already the majority of my RSW glass is in the attic as my new house is too small to display much of it,although it is great fun changing it around from time to time !.
Thank you very much again all!, Chris

Chris,
I have no experienced selling on ebay as a collector I only purchase!
These bowls are currently on e-bay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220710982373&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120500866384&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
These two have been on for some time.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270746082772&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
This one has been recently listed

For this particular bowl I have been the under-bidder on one ebay auction that sold for around GBP 25.00 and also the top bidder on another auction site that didn't meet reserve at approx GBP 50.

So like all things that go to internet auction it often depends on how well the item is listed and who is bidding on the day!

If you decide to list it please can you give me a postage quote to New Zealand as I would be keen!
Good Luck
Meegs

I would guess your bowl probably dates to the mid to late 1930s, as that was the period when everyone was making similar styles.

Definately 1930's then,thank you!.
Meegs, thanks for the links to those other pieces, quite a wide variation in prices really and I reckon that noneare quite as nice as mine,as I think the blue is fantastic and much more striking than the malachite/slag glass (but beauty is in the eye of the beholder though!!), it's interesting to note that not all have makers marks,it seems that moulds could have been re-used I guess.I will let you know if I do put it onto ebay, and as long as when packaged it is not over 2 kilos then I will quote worldwide postage!,I do think it will come out as less than 2kgs,although I do tend to over-pack, as better safe than sorry eh!..
On reflection I wonder if the bird is a 'bluebird' ?.
Best wishes,Chris

Ah, a Pigeon Bowl or a Budgie !!,I don't suppose it really matters and I did think that if it had been a kookaburra then I can't imagine too many of them in Yugoslavia!!.
Thank you,Chris

Yes Chris, I think the blue is very striking and the first one of these bowls I saw was in blue.
I also think of them as pigeons as the common old rock pigeons we have here look just like that when they settle for a short roost on a wet day; down the pull their heads into their shoulders and fluff up the feathers, tuck one foot underneath them and look very ho-hum. There is a spot a few of them fight over above my back door on wet days -  hoping I expect I will come out and feed them.

Cheers
Meegs

I thought these might be of some interest to this thread. I have a pair of candlesticks which are very similar in design, although not identical. The birds breast and wing feathers are a bit different. I've newly started a thread to see if they're also made by STS Abel. The sticks heights vary, 1 x 13cms and 1 x 14.5cms but this may be usual, I don't know.

Hello everybody!

I'm new in glassmessages.com, and i don't know if this topic is the right place to do my question... But leveraging all the discusion, i would like your opinion about the date of my "pigeon" bowl.
It doesn't have Sts Abel's mark. But is has some litle, very litle air bubles in the glass.
Is it Sts Abel Yugoslavia production? Or is it a copy?
And what about the production date?
Pamela said me, in a e-mail that maybe it was manufactured in the 60's. But, and the air bubles? It is only an imperfection in the glass?

welcome to GMB, Claudio - glad you've joined  :)
I've asked our moderators to revitalize this thread or even split your query to a new post into the general Glass section.

your pigeon bowl looks of early, pre-WWII production: very crisp pressing and the pigeons' feet sit prominently on the base - which is something the later bowls don't show, this is just my opinion. the colour looks right as well.

a further remark on the colour of your bowl: probably it's only reflection of the table it stands on, but from the photo it looks as if it's an uranium amber, please check under uv light?

also, please thoroughly check the center underneath again: the star and wineglass mark can be extremely faint sometimes  ;)

Hi Pamela and everyone!
I took new photos, now with a white background, but i need to publish then in parts, i think that the resolution is a litle high...
I think this bowl is a litle diferent from the other Sts Abel's bowls that are in press-pavillon.de.
Look at the "ring" that the bowl has inside it.

The foot base is diferent too, my bowl has a "squared foot"

And the "pigeons".
Pamela, this bowl is not a uraniun, it was the effect of the table were the photos were taken.
It doesn't has any mark of the manufacturer.
