Hello,
I'm hoping someone recognizes this small art glass bowl. The sides are quite thick around the opening & it has a ground & polished base.

Hi Sandra,
Looks like a Kosta Boda Atoll votive to me: http://www.midnightsun-designs.se/default.asp?page=kostaboda-candleholders.asp
Della
-
Wow! You were fast.
It does look like an Atoll votive.
Thank you, Della.
-
Hi Sandra and Della,
I don't think this one is the Kosta Atoll range though, because the waves/clouds should be thicker and more opaque, and the profile is slightly different. There seem to be a few lookalikes.
Cheers,
Cathy

Hi Cathy,
Very observant! I knew there were copies floating around and have always been unsure as to how to tell the difference. Will buy with more confidence now. Are the copies coming out of China, I wonder?
Cheers

Hi Beryl -
I'm afraid I don't know where they come from - it's another case of something that I've seen in a homewares shop somewhere, unfortunately. I have about three of the Atoll bowls somewhere, which is why I'd noticed these lookalikes with the thinner, more transparent trails. They're possibly not so much of a direct copy as an influenced design or just coincidental similarity.
Regards,
Cathy

Hi Cathy, I agree with you.. this doesn't look like Atoll. At all. ;D
Atoll colours are more cloudy, the clear glass is just about glimpsed, the actual glass mass is thicker and the rim is "softer". Your'e spot on
-
Thanks - I've had attacks of insecurity lately!
-
Thank you, Cathy  I wasn't even aware that there were look-alikes on the market :-[
Well spotted!!! :hiclp:
-
 back at ya, Della! The beasties have started showing up in cheaper homewares stores - a couple of years ago?
Meanwhile, we've hijacked a thread! We'll shift the Atoll section of this thread over to the one in Scandi glass soonish.
-
Good day.
I agree with Della. A Kosta Boda form designed by Ulrica Hydman Vallien and created using a centrifuge at Äfors.
They are a production piece available throughout Sweden in mass quanities.

I have to say I'm with Cathy on this one - the Atoll's are plentiful around here too and this, to me,
doesn't have the 'thickness' I see in the Atoll's. The Atoll internal decorations seem more 'cloudy' to me.
I have seen them around for a good while now and none have had thin lines.
The Kosta Boda Atoll was designed by Anna Ehrner.
The complete ranges can be seen on Kosta Boda (http://www.kostaboda.se)
Sandra, what are the measurements of your bowl?
Thanks
-
Might be an idea to ask Kosta on this one!
-
Hello.
I stand corrected and the form is "Atoll" and not designed by Ulrica Hydman Vallien who has designed a series of drinking glasses using the same technique as "Atoll"
The one I saw today in a local store has the thickness shown in the photo.

Hi Bill,
It's become a puzzle! I'm with Frank - it seems an email to Kosta is in order.
We had discussed this thread in another thread, so I've just moved those posts over to this thread so that they're all in one place.
Cheers!
-
Mine measures 4 1/4" wide & the glass is 1" thick. Atoll or not?
-
The smallest Atoll bowl is 4 3/8", or 110 mm.
The profile of your bowl doesn't seem to match the Atoll bowl.
Kosta does give en email address on their site so you could try emailing as Frank and Cathy suggested.
Swedes speak excellent english.
-
100% not Atoll.

I think can go one better....
Does everyone agree that this (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8602) looks like Sandra's? I bought it yesterday in an Australian homewares shop for $AUD 9.00. There's no mention of the factory name other than that it was made in China, but the pattern is named as 'Scandia' (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8603). It does look a lot like Atoll, but when you see the two together (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8606) the differences in height, weight, quality, profile, trail thickness become apparent. The base of the Chinese 'Scandia' (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8604) is ground flat, whereas the base of the Atoll (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8605) is moulded and concave.
Hope this helps someone!

Yes!! At last!! Thanks Cathy B :hiclp:
I'd given up trying to convince people that Sandra's bowl was not Kosta Atoll, you did it!! :chky:

Well-found Cathy, that looks like a match to me. :)
