Title: does anyone recognise this TOP HAT?
Post by: scimowser on October 20, 2005, 08:37:36 AM
hi there everyone, im new to the site but a member is a good friend of mine and strongly recommended it to me. I was wondering if anyone knew what make this glass top hat i have is? Its approx. 2.5" high and 4" wide, with bubbles inside the glass. I know it isnt whitefriars but im interested to find out as i cant find it anywhere on the web.

The bubble patterns are quite regular, and the pics are from my webcam as my digital camera has been "misplaced" lol

the base is smooth with a convex indent in the centre, I will take better pics when i can.

Any help is much appreciated, thankyou

Well, it's in the same shape as Nailsea but I don't think it is.

It says in Miller's "Glass of the '50's & '60's" that this trapped air bubble technic was used throughout the 20th century. Nailsea Glasshouse in Bristol operated 1788-1873 so we can rule that out.

Scimowser's hat probably doesn't have an un-ground pontil mark anyway.

I don't think it is American.  I know it isn't Fenton which is the most profilic maker of top hats in the US.

agreed, i checked the Fenton website and it wasnt there. There was one linked through google images, but it is no longer listed on the website therefore i cant find out what exactly it is.

I've seen these top hats from time to time, usually people asking on the www.whitefriars.com site if they're Whitefriars.   They aren't.  :P

According to circa 50's glass, Fratelli Toso have made top hats, and to me this piece does look Italian.  I'm not saying it's by any particular manufacturer though.  Just Italian.
