Clara, it looks like Fratelli Toso (Murano) to me. I've seen cylinder form pws similar to this. This is the first square one I've seen.

The Millefiori is very thin. Like a small shaving. This is totally unlike any other millefiori in my elderly father in law's other paperweights. Could you venture a guess at the age? Thanks again, Anita

I've always thought they were from 1960s-70s, but I'm not positive on the dates. Maybe someone will have a more definite idea.

Its obviously a tea-totalers decanter for port.

the small holes are from the polishing of the base cutting into the bubbles

Thanks, it should be obvious to you folks I know very little about this. My FIL is 94 and I am trying to weed through his possessions. I may have other items in the future. Thanks again.

Yes, USMC Col Retired living in our state veterans home. In fact he was Charles Lindbergh's pilot in the Pacific arena. My MIL and he opened an antique store in the 1970's after years of collecting. The good stuff is all sold, but I am weeding through the odds and ends to evaluate. Their sales will fill in some financial gaps our older heroes experience in their own age. Thanks.

A possible reason for the canes to be thinner than usually seen is that they have been deliberately flattened out immediately after applying them to the item. That would cause the canes to spread, without losing their basic pattern and also to become thinnner.
I suggest this because it seems that the canes are close to the outside of the item and therefore do not have the magnified effect of being in a glass dome, but they appear to be somewhat larger in area than I would expect of usual Murano canes. The majority of canes seen in regular domed paperweights are actually quite small in diameter, but are well enlarged by the magnification of the dome.
Well, that's my theory. :)

The cylinder pws that are similar to this have wonderful optic properties. The canes are on the outside of a hollow core and reflect on the inside. So it looks like there are two layers of canes. The square one is not transparent, so probably wouldn't have the same effect. Clara, is the paperweight hollow in the middle? Or is it solid?
I've always called these pws with handles.

Anita, my pw is solid on inside. The canes are like slivers very near the outside of the edge. It almost looks like they are painted on-- but it is not obviously. The controlled bubbles are only on the outside. The core is solid and clear.

It must be pretty heavy. The bullicante technique with the strands of color joining and around bubbles is one that Fratelli Toso used very often. Your pw is not as common as the cylinder ones, most likely. Yours is the first square one I've seen, and I've seen many of the cylinder ones. Yours is a very nice find. I like it.
