Title: I.D. for studio glass signature - ID = SMS (Suffolk Manor Studio) David Brett
Post by: sectioned106 on May 11, 2012, 04:12:04 PM
Hi, can anyone read this please?  - I have looked at it for ages but still can't make it out!

(It is actually on the bottom of a paperweight but I thought I would try a general glass query rather than a specific paperweight one).

I can read the obvious bit.... England 2003, the rest looks like GOUG to me but that rings no bells.

I couldn't make out england. I've tried to download the image to turn it the other way up to try to read it, but "computer says no".
I thought it might read Sue S......

Any chance of seeing the paperweight?  There could be a clue there.

Hopefully attached is a photograph of the paperweight, as requested.

It appears to be clear glass with an iridescent green overlay which has been cut back leaving two raised frogs facing each other, (rather clever).

It is 2 inches across.

It's not an overlay - rather it's been cameo carved.

I read the bottom four letters at SNGS. Perhaps the last two letters mean Glass Studio? SN Glass Studio?

Hi all

The initials are SMS which stand for Suffolk Manor Studio. The artist is David Brett.
but I do not know whether SMS is still trading.

I have several of the SMS weights in my collection including the two frog weight,
the latest is dated 2004.

The weights are not cameo carved but either acid etched or more likely sand blasted.

Best regards

Derek
