Title: "New" Monart bubbly colourway
Post by: chopin-liszt on December 26, 2012, 01:32:20 PM
I found this lovely little bowl at the weekend. ;D

Round polished pontil mark, with polished flat base surrounding it. Incredibly finely made, very thin glass, including the base.

Opaque lilac enamels, diffusely spread throughout the clear glass body, with deep purple, deep blue, deep green and deepish pinky clear enamel splodges at the base. (The one deepish pink splodge is over my forefinger in the third pic.)

It is also decidedly wonky in profile - it would make a nice stand for an ostrich egg.

It's mine, and staying that way.  8)

A nice find Sue, it looks like colour code 244 and shape JC. Could you post the size of the bowl.

I know Muzzy has been playing with the measuring tape. I will hunt for it...

I'm randomly assuming that Muzzy is a cat.  ;D

Currently, she is a tape-measure-hider, but mostly she's a cat, yes. :)

Found an ancient one - inches only.
Top diameter of the bowl is ~ 5".
Bottom diameter is ~ 2 and 3/4".
Height is variable.
1 and 7/8" at the shortest, to 2 and 1/8" at the tallest.

Gary, there isn't a 244 in Frank's catalogues. I can't find this colourway in any images, and the actual number 244 isn't even there....

That's why I did sort of think it might be appropriate to put "new" in the title here - and it is in inverted commas.

Frank has not updated the colour code pages on his web site and as such only shows a small number of colour codes used by Monart, to date there is over 500 Monart colour codes.

I have been researching Monart colour codes for a few years now and have found quite a few colour codes not in Frank's site and 244 is one of them.
I have collected these colour codes from various sources that include museum archives, other peoples Monart collections, auction houses and the internet and I only designate a colour code with a corresponding Monart label with the colour code written on it.

So have you seen this colourway before Gary?
Are you convinced by the single pink splodge on my forefinger in the third pic? - it really is there and is a cerise shade.
I've shown my wee brother a pic, he says he's seen it only once before and he doesn't have a bit.  :o

On my data base of Monart colour codes I have 5 images of Monart with that colour way and one with a full Monart label (1V: MC: 244), due to copyright I can not post them here.
If it is permitted by copyright law I am willing to email the images to you Sue for your perusal.

I believe you, Gary  ;D - but I would be interested in seeing it on a larger piece. I don't think it's a copyright problem if it's just for a single person's academic interest
So, not perhaps as scarce as I first thought it might be.
But my pics can be used by you and for Scotland's Glass and for any other records needed. :)

If you want, let me know your email address Sue I will send you the images of the Monart pieces with colour code 244.
I have over 1,500 images of Monart pieces and only 5 of these have the colour code 244, so IMHO it is fairly rare colour way.
Thanks for posting size of bowl and permission to use our images.

My email is in the envelope at the side of my name, Gary - shall I send you the un-re-sized-for-the-gmb images?
Or should I try to get better ones too?

I'm happy enough with the word "scarce".
(I don't trust "rare" - except for steaks.)

Sue here is a link to a Monart bowl that just sold on ebay with the same colour code as your bowl.

Wow - so it is!
Different shape, the colours are in the rim rather than the base, but yes, it's the same colourway.
And, funnily enough, I paid £46 for my bowl too. (No P&P for me though ;D)

Thanks Gary, for remembering my bowl. It's a really lovely colourway - so suitable for Scottish glass - all heather-y.  :)

Hi Sue,
I have a large piece with this colourway (244).
I purchased this from Canada some years ago.
When I find a copy of the photo I'll send copy to your email so you can paste
on the board if you wish, but can't find it just yet.

Cheers

Bill (Kiwi)

Hiya Bill! I've not seen you around for a wee while - but I am still on the lookout for odd shapes at good prices - you are not forgotten. ;)

BIG bit.... ooooh... lovely!
