Title: Pirelli Pin Tray
Post by: adam20 on April 24, 2012, 05:56:58 PM
A pin tray with enamelled decoration - has Pirelli label to back, which is why I bought it. Just posting to see what others think.

Very interesting - I was not aware of Pirelli producing them. I wonder if we can date this by the label?

It looks to have slightly sharper corners than Chance trays, and it's something I have seen before in other trays, but it is such a minefield trying to identify them all. Is the back sprayed with enamel or is it cased/flashed opal?

The tray is sprayed enamel to back - I also was not aware of Pirelli making these - the Pirelli section in Frank's website is very interesting, I have not looked at it for a while.

Thanks. Slumped glassware was made by several companies from the 1950s, so it is difficult to determine. I would have thought Frank would have found something if it was producing them, so perhaps they were sourced from Chance and rebadged by Pirelli?

It seems as though Pirelli outsourced a lot of glass. I saw a labelled paperweight go on eBay for over £60 and it was quite rough looking.

£60 does seem rather high for a basic gift type paperweight that was made at Vasart Ltd and marketed through Pirelli Glass. However, decent looking spoke pattern weights from Vasart Ltd can often sell for £40 or £50 and there are collectors who are happy to pay extra for an example with the Pirelli label.
