Title: Oddly shaped CRIMP ROSE, Identity?
Post by: TanToday on January 07, 2012, 02:51:22 PM
Hey gang, first post here, but I've been reading, off and on, for a month or so.

Been collecting Paperweights since the mid 80's, got hooked, and for a few years was active, then other interests took hold, but six months ago, I pulled the good weights out that I purchased from L.H.Selman, and was surprised that most had increased in value, and was AGAIN struck with admiration for the skill, talent, and perseverance it takes to make these high end lampworked weights.

So, I've spent a small fortune again, and have aquired a hundred more, mostly name artists, and some better Millefiori. Recently I've been trying to obtain as many good Colin Richardson, David Graebers, Rick and Melissa Ayottes, Ray and Bob Banfords, Debbie Tarsitano's, P. Stankards, and J. Deacons as I can find that meet my standards.

In any case, I do, from time to time, buy some oddities of little value just because they strike my fancy.

That prompts my first post here. I don't particularly like CRIMP ROSE's, but this one on eBay struck me as different, the shape of the dome, and the color and execution of the crimp rose. I cannot place it, so my fellow weight lovers, is anyone game to identify this one for me? If so, thank you in advance.

Your rose is a modern chinese knockoff that was not made with a crimp but rather with applied petals.
Your's is not a bad example as far as these go.

Hey, thanks Mark.

Oddly, that answers WHY I liked this one, since i have never really liked ANY real CRIMP ROSE's before, grin!

What I find strange, is that the Chinese haven't really started massive counterfeiting of name artist lampworked weights. That would be "right up their alley" high value, labor intensive, and impossible to trace. They have pretty much gutted out every brand name there is, and with glass, destroyed stained glass as a domestic industry, along with anything else that is labor intensive.

Anyways, thanks for the ID on that weight.

Hi Bruce

I think the key to answering your question is in the phrase 'labour intensive': the Chinese can do that well, but 'skills intensive' is much more of a challenge - and much less profitable anyway given the time involved. So cheap and cheerful gets copied in quantity (eg tourist trade 'Murano', often turning up in Murano labelled as such, and sometimes exported for re-sale as the genuine item in the USA), but highly skilled work (eg Stankard or Buzzini) does not get copied, because they can't do it well enough or quickly enough. I suspect that the high end paperweight business is not really 'right up their alley', as it is too specialised.

Hi Bruce, welcome to the GMB.

Good to see that you have been given a quick ID for your crimp flower weight.

As you may see in your original post, your image has been converted to a smaller one which is clickable to the source. This avoids a problem that some people have when a horizontal scroll bar is forced by a very large image.

For future reference, please note that Tinypic has a habit of quickly reassigning urls to other images! We recommend that images are placed directly in the GMB thread by means of the "Attach" facility below the new posting window. The facility allows up to four images per post meaning a single jpg file combining multiple images is not needed. If you use this facility and have problems with the Board kb size limits, please just ask for assistance.
