Love the forum and this is my first post.  

Living in Australia, we don't get to see many interesting or old weights, so admiring all of your lovely pieces is very rewarding.

I know it's nothing special but it is bright and colourful and appeals to me.  It is listing in Australia so I am watching it.  Does anyone have any ideas about it?

My guess is Murano but that seems to cover just about everything that can't be labelled with a more exotic name.

This looks like one of the ones I call 'Murano-Chinese'  :twisted:  :wink:

But as you say, it's bright and colourful, so hey!  If you like it, go for it!   :D  Buy it for joy, not for profit!   :D  :wink:

What is "Murano-Chinese" ?  Do you mean Chinese copies or is it something more legitimate?

Ooops!  Left-overs from another thread!   :roll:  There has been some discussion here about weights made in China bearing 'Made in Murano' labels.  I'm not suggesting this is one of them, but where there is some doubt I tend to think of them as 'Murano-Chinese'.  

Personally, I don't mind Chinese weights, as long as they aren't being passed off as Muranese.  And I don't believe in aportioning the blame for such fraudulent 'passing-off' all to one side or the other!  

Sorry for the minor diversion into trading practices / politics :oops:

They are labelled just Murano, no "Made in"

Being a pedantic so-and-so, I make "sucking noises" when I see the words "Vintage" and "old" used in the same sales blurb without clarification of age.

If it's vintage, it should be at least 50 years old. As for saying something is "old", what do people mean?

The weight in the listing is Chinese and modern. It might be 10 years old but more likely it's much younger than that.

In my opinion, it's a good example of its type and well worth a few Aussie dollars to brighten somebody's day.

The 1970's seems like yesterday to us, but to a paperweight collector under the age of 30 it would be considered vintage, if not antique - so God knows what they'd make of us 50 somethings! :D

I only consider the 19th century weights to be antique, and up to 1960 vintage, although in the case of weights like Strathearn and Vasart, the early days can be said to be vintage as per the maker.

In the case of 1980's and 90's paperweights, they're what I'd call contemporary.

And if I were a paperweight I'd be considered vintage.  :oops:  :wink:  :P

From one vintage offering to another - thank you.  I learnt a lot from your replies to my first post and appreciate your time.

As I said, not much comes on the Australian market, so please have a look at this one.  Is it another muranese?  I think so but I like the murky green colour as it's a bit different from the usual.

Hi Jenny,

Your first two weights are basic Chinese ones.

But the third is a good Murano, probably early 20th century by Fratelli Toso. (Nothing wrong the pictures as far as I can see - except that clicking the first of those two images goes to the wrong ImageShack page!)

Definitely agree with Kev - a nice, edible Murano 'cake', with thick sugar icing and decorated with 'jelly-tots'!  Yummy!   :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
