Patrick, how wonderful for you to have been able to see them, and thank you for sharing the story and pictures. The windows are superb, aren't they?

Has anyone actually researched in depth all the Whitefriars stained glass windows?

Hi Anne,
As far as I know only Dennis Hadley has done any serious research into the Stained glass windows of Whitefriars but I could be wrong !
He sent me a letter some time ago telling me.
Quote..       " the company order books show an order for July 1936... " 6 pieces of tracery glass for the Rector's study. Cartoons by Edmond Hogan. $300 "  So each panel cost $50, but at that time Powell obtained nearly $5 to the pound...... and 10 pounds is not much for something so intricate "
He then goes on to say that he could find no order for "Vices" which leads him to believe they were a gift to Dr Brooks , the Rector, in order to encourage him to order more windows.
Nearly all the windows in the main part of the church are designed by James Hogan.
   Regards,   Patrick.

Hi, It may be very hard to gain access to see them as they are in a very private part of the building.  But if you can you will be blown away by their beauty. Regards Patrick.

Really fabulous Patrick, it must have been a very moving experience for you.

Just for those who are not aware, at the back of the Musuem of London book on Whitefriars there is a section devoted to Stained Glass, with a list of locations where examples can be found both in the UK and abroad. Loads in the U.S.A (not just New York) .  If any of you want to know if you have a local Church with this glass, but don't have the book, I am happy to look and let you know. Just give me your County and a nearby local town name and  there is likely to be somewhere nearby.  I was surprised to find some located not six miles from me!  Emmi

Emmi - Could you please look at Albany, NY?

I know that Albany, NY has more Tiffany stained glass windows still in existence than any other city.  I am curious about Whitefriars windows there also.

I have often wondered in the past if the stained glass windows in our house could have been by Whitefriars.  ??? The whole estate was built in the late 1920's / early 1930's and is just down the road from the Wealdstone factory.  I suppose it could be just wishful thinking, but if they weren't Whitefriars, it does seem a bit 'coals to Newcastle'  ::)  Does anyone know whether Whitefriars ever did anything like this domestic stained glass.  And yes, it really is proper stained glass, not just leaded lights.  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/albums/userpics/10048/normal_Landing_windows.jpg

Hi Leni.  Whitefriars did do commercial stained glass for hospitals, schools , and other businesses, so it would not be out of the question for them to have done designs for normal domestic buildings, especially if the houses were part of an "estate". The Museum of London has over 3,200 designs by W/F apparantly so it may be worth your while sending them your photo to see if they can through any light on it (no pun intended!)

Sue, sorry those two place names are not listed. Cheers  Emmi

OK, thanks Patrick. I'm assuming he hasn't published it in book form yet?

Hi Anne, Loads in both Cumbria and Lancs. The following are listed, however, it is of course possible that the buildings no longer exist!???

Brilliant! Thanks Emmi - I'll add the info to my list of places to visit - I have a lot of graveyards to visit this year in pursuit of War Grave photos and family history stuff so I can check out the windows in the churches at the same time. I think all the Cumbrian churches still exist - don't know about the Lancs ones you gave though.  I'm nearer to Carnforth, Lancaster, Morecambe, Garstang area which is north Lancashire. Blackburn is east Lancs, Blackpool is west Lancs (about an hour south-west).

I don't know how much there may be local to me as there were two stained glass works in Lancaster whose (fabulous) work appears in many local churches but I have been taking photos of stained glass windows for a while and am slowly trying to get around them all within a reasonable distance of where I live. (Yes they will eventually go online too along with any info I can find about them.)
