Title: Pressed Pelican Figural Ashtray - ID = Inwald Barolac
Post by: meegs on February 11, 2011, 03:32:21 AM
Good afternoon Everyone,
I need some help with identifying my ashtray - my google skills have let me down!
This chap is obviously well fed as he is not fishing for the 2 frogs in his pond but appears to be preening!
The ashtray is 4 1/2 inches by 2 3/4 inches and height is 1 inch. The figure is about 3 1/2 inches high, making total height 4 1/2 inches.
The base has been polished and the edges bevelled. The surface of the "pond" is rippled and the frogs and their bubbles are recessed into the base to a depth of about 1/8 inch and I assume acid etched like the figure. There is a little wear to the base and also a couple of shiny patches on the figure itself.
Thanks for your help,
Meegs.

Nice one! The shiny patches are where the finisher missed spots when applying the acid paste to create the matte finish or there were small air bubbles in the paste. Old pieces like these often have them, particularly when the matting is selective. I would date him as 1930-1950s but I don't know who made him.

It's gorgeous Meegs!  I only have one piece of Barolac,  but I cherish it.

Aren't Pamela's catalogues and web pictures an amazing resource...., it was through her I identified my Stolzle Squared Eye and Bgley Cocktail Time pieces.

I bet that lovely Pelican will become a 'Keeper'.

Enjoy!

Rosie. :)
