Title: carnival query
Post by: chuggy on July 02, 2006, 05:11:30 PM
Bought this little bowl today complete with frog, but can't find the pattern, I'm sure it's probably quite common but not one I've come across before.

Thanks

Hi Paul -

It is Fenton Pepper Plant.

Thanks Connie it's not in my old book. I think this shape is called a hat it stands about 3.5" tall on a round base and about 5.5" across the mouth. Is it a common pattern or at all unusual ( he asks hopefully).

Hi Paul -

I am sorry but I am not at home so I don't have my books. Look on Dave Doty's site or hopefully Glen will be along soon and she can give you the full details.

Paul - I wrote an article some years ago that shows the clear differences between the Pepper Plant and the Holly patterns, when seen on the hat shape (yes it is a hat shape). Rather than repeat it all here I will give you a link to my illustrated article.

http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/pepper.html

The flower holder inside is not something that I believe would have been in it when it was made. I suspect it was "married" up since (and is most likely a European - probably UK - "frog" aka flower holder).

By the way, Paul - what's the colour? It's hard to be sure in the photo.

Thanks Glen after reading the article I'm more confuded than ever as the base shape seems to suggest Holly, but the illustrations of the pattern are pepper plant with the berries starting at the bottom with 3 on the right and then a single on the left.

Paul, can you take a photo that shows the base? That will determine whether you have PP or Holly. And maybe tell us the colour of the base glass, if you can.

Thanks Glen here's a picture of the base and despite the strong amethyst colouring the glass is a fairly dark marigold.

OK Paul - that is the Holly pattern in the hat shape. The Pepper Plant variation is really the same pattern but an earlier mould using a hexagonal base that is ground and not "Snapped up". The pattern differs in that the berries are pulled down into elongated shapes that got called peppers. It is the same pattern concept. The round (snapped up) collar base (marie) shows that you have the later Holly hat.

Is the base colour clear? It does look like it's amethyst.

Nice piece, by the way. Not wildly scarce or anything, but a good looking piece of Carnival.

Glen
(ps I hope I made sense - it's not easy to explain)

Thanks Glen makes perfect sense to me, I bought it for the best reason of all in that I liked it and thought it was an older piece, and as my bits of carnival are just a fun diversion I've set a price limit of £10 on any one piece so just seeing what I can put together below that level, it's quite fun this way. I'm glad the carnival frog didn't belong with it as it didn't look right at all.

But the frog may have value in its own right if its in decent nick. Might be worth selling to put towards another piece of carnival.

I'm also collecting carnival with much the same philosophy as you Paul!
