Title: Maria Stahlikova cut and engraved dish 1958
Post by: rocco on March 04, 2011, 03:55:44 PM
Another nice find: cut and engraved glass dish, blue and green, by Maria Stahlikova.
This particular design won her a Grand Prix at the Brussels Expo 1958!

I have to show this because
a) it is really beautiful, and I guess more on the rare side
b) I am proud of having identified it myself :)

It is shown in CGR 1961/11: http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue196111?authkey=Gv1sRgCMLS4bnjxOKIoQE#5440634409915139218

In the text they say that she used blanks from Skrdlovice and Karlovarske sklo for her cut designs.
I guess that the blank for this one comes from Skrdlovice? -- The colour combination seems familiar...

The answer is easy. When absolutely clean and pure glass without any even small bubbles than Karlovarske sklo.

What about to start collect Murano Michael. You really hurt us with growing of your collection :chky:

Thanks, Jindrich!
Collecting Czech glass is so much more fun :)

Glass of the Stahlikova bowl is not very clean and pure -- so Skrdlovice...

A beautiful, beautiful bowl, Michael!  Well done...  someone in Poland is just-a-bit-more-than-slightly-jealous.

Thanks, Anik and Dirk!
To me the best thing regarding this nice piece of glass is the historical aspect -- I love the fact that it won an Expo 58 Grand Prix :)

That's a beauty, Michael. Please tell me you found it in an obscure  little shop in a backstreet of an tiny little town I will never visit. I really like Stahlikova's pieces but they're so hard to find.

Congrats!

David

PS How about a trade: the two glass thistles, AND the tartan box, AND a bottle of organic maple syrup? But wait, there's more....

Because the thistle glasses are mine (with the swank boxes)!  :sc: And you don't need to send the maple syrup, I just picked up a jar of same whilst buying groceries.  :smg:

Wow, this is a great piece. I have not seen it before and your attribution is likely perfect too. This kind of piece is pretty unusual and (in my opinion) is one of the "best" pieces of Skrdlovice I have seen yet on GMB. A scarce and special thing. Cut glass from this period of Skrdlovice is extremely unusual to find. Well done on the find and "wow" again!

Bought this dish today, from the seller on the fleamarket who had the same beautiful pink/clear engraved vase last week which John (glassobsessed) showed here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,45009.0.html).

Unfortunately a big crack runs through it, but as these pieces are so hard to find I had to buy it (if only for reference).
It is not shown in the CGR article on Maria Stahlikova, but it obviously comes from the same range...

OK, that's it.  I'm moving to Austria...

Michael, it's a more-than-wonderful piece. But what a terrible shame that it's damaged.

You are more than welcome (if you promise not to buy any Czech glass ;D)

Yes, it's a pity that it is damaged -- it was a really great piece...
I hesitated quite some time until I decided to get it despite of the crack -- I just couldn't leave it there.
But I found two very nice of those "Novy Bor"? vases (with the coloured blob in the base, check out my gallery :)), so I wasn't too disappointed.

OK, I'll leave all the Czech glass for you.  I'll only buy Czechoslovakian. :P

Michael, I've looked into your album, but I don't know which coloured-blob base pieces are new... I assume  this (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/Czech?authkey=Gv1sRgCPCtsYSivPC5Dg#5684856749606881314) one and... ?

Yes, and the one left to it (with the multi-coloured swirl -- I love those!)
I think Jindrich identified them as Chribska production...

Ah, yes... Until a few weeks ago, I also had one of those.  It was light green with a light pink swirl. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/sad/sad0019.gif) (http://www.footballerpictures.co.uk)

Oh, not nice.

If we knew a designer there would certainly be more value to them.
I think it is a lovely design...

On Saturday I found the second dish from the photo in CGR showing the Bruxelles '58 Expo awarded cut pieces by Maria Stahlikova! >> Link (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPtiCejA7Xa8jyiz6SPeodcMkv5mOtmYF0Dbq0CWlAaIyGaLUjiCru67xVuKapqow/photo/AF1QipOdiBO10oYUP4mnyTl26ZdPtpldjLl040Zxj1RA?key=d0dZenZmM190Z0NNMXpNeDEzZG9ILUpnT0RRaU93)
Robert states in his book that probably only a dozen of these were produced, so I am a really lucky guy :)

This one has a sandblasted mark at the rim ("VZKG")...

Thank you very much for the nice comments Christine & Anik :)
When I searched for my old thread, I realized that almost exactly 7 years have passed since I found the first piece...

Being myself a proud owner of another bowl from this series (The design with the 3 'wavy' lines), I can only say VERY well done!

Thank you Assaf!
Any chance to see a pic of your bowl? ;)
I wonder if these pieces were only produced in this particular colourway...

As far as I know, this was the only colourway. I am a bit confused by the engraving on Assafs piece though, it seems to be an EU governmental thing, perhaps as gifts between countrys' representatives..... why they would use a Czech piece of glass?, seems daft.

Robert, I think you are referring to my bowl ;)
I didn't think much about the engraved logo so far, particularly because it is quite discrete.
Doing a little google search showed that VŽKG stands for the Vítkovice steel works (Vítkovické železárny Klementa Gottwalda n.p.).

Yes Michael, my mistake, that explanation makes some sense, even so, it must have been a very upmarket gift.

Hi Michael,
I would love to post a picture of my bowl, but unfortunatly it is in storage at the moment, due to some planned renovations.... I will defenetly post a picture when I'll unpack my glass, I realy miss it :-(... However, it has exactly the same colorway as all other examples in this thread.
