It came without its screw top - which may well have been metal. A broad band of Matthey Crinkles around the midriff - above which are two gold coloured bands, and with a similar band around the base. The wording underneath reads.........'HYGENE WARE - MADE IN ENGLAND' - and in the centre is.........REGD. NO. 873612 - which is beyond the cut-off date of my 'Blue Book', so unable to check and see to whom this was registered, although would imagine it's somewhere around the mid 1950's.
Can't see anything indexed in David's 'Chance Expressions' book under 'Hygene Ware', so may well not be anything to do with Chance.
The shape makes me think of a pickle jar possibly, although I appreciate that traditionally pickles always had glass tops - height is about 4" (100mm).
So - all thoughts welcome please, and thanks for looking. :)

Hi Paul,
mid century kitchen ware - sugar, milk etc with plastic lids
see here for example ( although not frosted in this case) : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1930s-Art-Deco-Bakelite-Hygene-Ware-sugar-syrup-pourer-dispenser-/300882299718?pt=UK_Collectables_Vintage_RL&hash=item460dfb8b46
Added - better example here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/hygene-ware-retro-1950s-serv-a-spoon-sugar-spring-loaded-milk-creamer-jug-/400460889286?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item5d3d543cc6

ah yes, thank Mel, now I do remember having seen these plastic lidded things before (probably when they first came out, unfortunately). So probably nothing to do with Chance then - do you know to whom the No. was registered Mel??
thanks very much for finding the links. :)
-
sorry Paul, don't have any references to that reg number either.
Have you seen this 1955 pottery gazette ad ?

Progressive Novelty Industries Ltd, Manchester
any help?
-
no, I hadn't - very interesting, and thanks again, and since they call themselves 'Industries', it's quite probable that they made these items. I'll look at this Rd. No. on my next trip to TNA at Kew, and if there is anything further of interest I'll add it here.
-
P.S. I notice the clock hasn't gone forward one hour :)
-
Nope, nothing to do with Chance, as you surmised ;)
The Crinkles effect is seen not only on Chance but also many other glassware, as seen here. There is also some glassware that appears to come from Czechoslovakia, which has the Crinkles effect.

P.S. I notice the clock hasn't gone forward one hour :)
That's because the board runs on GMT - or more properly UCT. ;)

Earliest date is 09 Jun 1955 according to the date of incorporation:

Paul, did you see out RD lookup topic sticky at the top of glass?
-
thanks Anne. No - I didn't .............not clever like that, plus the fact that my interest in this sort of glass is not as passionate as other areas, but thanks for reminding me of the facility.
I know the Rd. No., but until I visit Kew I will not know the exact date, and would like to see for myself exact details of the registration name - so will abstain from making an entry until then.
If anyone has an unresolved question that needs the assistance of TNA - think Fred did mention something but I've now foregotten - let me have details - I'm hoping to visit later this week, hopefully.
-
I've added this one to the list in the sticky here, Paul: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,52152.0.html
Having them all in one topic should make it easy to print a copy to take with you or note the details needed for lookups... thank you for undertaking lookups, we do appreciate it immensely. :)
-
Here then are details for this particular Rd. No., and seems there isn't an illustration of the lid. You'll see that the text is split over two pages. First registered on 21st April 1954.
The Kew Archive references are............ for the Registration (the text part) ... BT 53/211
for the Representation (the pix) .... BT52/7921

Excellent, Paul, thank you for adding this info. I see that Johnsen and Jorgensen are still in business (as JJPack) http://www.jjpack.com/about/, and Jackson's of Knottingley were the company which took over Bagley, and is now in turn a part of the Rockware empire: http://www.knottingley.org/history/glass_industry.htm
