Title: Ships Decanter Identification? - ID = Bischoff, USA
Post by: oldschool on September 27, 2011, 12:09:46 AM
Hi All,
This is my first post, and my first question.
Can anyone identify this decanter's maker?
It is 9 inches (23cm) in diameter, and 7.5 inches (19cm) tall at the stopper.
There is a slightly recessed and polished pontil on the bottom.
The vertical ribbing is internal. The stopper is clear, and seems to be the origional

I am putting this decanter in a garage sale this weekend and still do not know who made it, or what I should ask for it.
I would be very thankful for any help.

Different coloured body and stopper seem common in the US, but i don't know who made it. This Viking decanter looks to have a vaguely similar stopper [LINK REMOVED]

The stopper doesn't look terribly well made, do you think it could be Empoli Christine?

Sorry for this late reply,
The stopper is not a perfect fit, though much better than the pictures imply.
There is a matching wear ring indicating this stopper has been in place for some time.
Would I be correct in assuming that the stopper would be fitted when the glass is still soft?
If so, then I think that it may well be a marriage.
Thanks for all the replies!

Stoppers are not fitted when glass is soft.

The neck of an item and the shank of the stopper are often both ground (looking like "wear rings") such that the stopper will be a perfect fit to the neck. If the shank and neck are both ground like this and the stopper is not a good, tight fit, then it is doubtful that the stopper is the right one for the item.

I have at last identified my decantor.
It is Bischoff.  It is shown in their 1962 catalog.
They were located less than two miles from Blenko in Huntington,Virgina, USA.
See catalog picture below.

Based on proportion, I think mine is the medium sized one.

The top rim looks skinny because someone has ground it down!

The bottom of the stopper has also been ground, in an attempt to

hide the chips caused by clumsy user inserting the stopper, and chipping the rim of the decanter. This poor repair is why the stopper no longer fits the decanter properly

Thanks! But the credit for the ID goes to two members of the Pottery,Glass and Porcelain forum on Ebay.
Their user names are "catisfaction" and "sali1642".
Using their info I found this site with more info on the factory--- http://www.timeinabottle-artglassandpottery.com/historyofBischoffGlass.html
