Title: Small glass with a 'disc' Knop
Post by: petet63 on November 01, 2012, 08:07:33 PM
Hi, does anyone recognise this glass. It doesn't have that ring to it so assuming cut glass rather than crystal (I am Regularly wrong) 10 cm in height with a disc? knop. I know I have seen this glass before but no idea where, it happens a lot !, any clues will help. Thanks

sorry, can't help with suggestions of purpose, although simply decorative might be an option.       No need to assume 'cut glass', it appears very obvious :)       The word crystal is often coupled with 'lead', and even though this may not produce a ring (glass possibly too thick or wrong shape), it may well still contain some lead to assist with cutting.       If this were from some time earlier in the C20 it might be a cigarette holder, toothpick holder.    What is the extent of wear, if any, and is the cutting sharp?

Hi Paul, I should have mentioned I have a set of six. I did think they were crystal, it was just the ring that wasn't there but with the  "(glass possibly too thick or wrong shape)" they could be. They are fairly solid. They certainly look like crystal when stood next to the other crystal. Next to no wear on the bottom and the cut seems to be good quality. I thought maybe liqueur (or a slightly posh Shot glass  ;D)

well, if you have six then I guess they are for booze of some kind - but that knop seems most unusual.   Let's hope someone recognizes them.

Possibly the knop (disc) is for holding the glass by so as to not warm the drink with ones hand......  as opposed to holding on to the bottom of the bowl....   just a thought.....

It is an unusual knop. I know I have seen it and am trawling all my links. No idea why but Scandinavian seems to be in my head.??  Something about the shape. ?  I will look at crystal patterns and see if I can get a lead there.   Thanks all.
