Title: Ink bottle stopper
Post by: Roger H on February 21, 2013, 11:53:00 AM
Hi there, I know this stopper has been on the board before but I cant find it and yet I have seen it. So I am setting a new topic on it because I have just purchased it and its in excellent condition and it now sits in the top of my walsh walsh ink bottle and makes it look very balanced.
I do realize it isnt an exact match and is probably about 20 years out of sync but it does look good.
Having a close inspection of the canes, within them is a circle of diamond shapes, circle of heart shapes and the inner circle are club shapes.
Do you like it???         Regards Roger. :)

It looks good Roger, glad you like it, the thread wasn't originally about this stopper but about a Richardsons bottle it's here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,49679.msg280612.html#msg280612 (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,49679.msg280612.html#msg280612)

Your botlle looks pretty good to me. I also have a bottle with a stopper that is not an exact cane match, not looked at it too closely since I got it but probably Richardsons.

Kind regards
Nick

Wouldn't it be amazing if you each swapped stoppers and they matched your bottles ;D

It doesn't fit Kevin I sold it to Roger ;) I'd given up trying to find a bottle to match.
My current one has the thin Richardson type stopper shaft.

Hi Nick / Roger.

The stopper with heart canes is, I believe, a Whitefriars stopper from around 1950, just when Walsh Walsh finished, and some workers migrated there. A few years ago I had a bottle with a very similar stopper, including heart canes - but the base had canes which were a strange mix of Whitefriars moulding and Walsh Walsh 7/6 centres.  I think it was discussed on a thread on this board some time ago, and some of the canes in my bottle turned up in examples of Whitefriars Triplex and  EIIR 1953 weights. I also had a paperweight with heart canes - see image below - at least two different canes match your stopper.

Coincidentally, I took the bottle back in part exchange recently, so once the dust has settled on the PCC AGM this weekend I should be able to take some new images of it.

Well that looks as close as any two stoppers will get.(circa 1950).
How about starting up an inky dinky bottle stopper swapper page?? but I guess that would be difficult because  money  might get involved.
     Regards Roger.
