Title: Whitefriars pewter bark - why no bids?

I don't know if glass sent across the world survives a customs exam at both ends of the journey.

Why isn't anyone bidding on this one please?

Hi Deb  :D  Perhaps everyone's using a sniper now?  That vase looks ok to me, although the photo gives it a strangely widen top rim.  There's another vase the same for sale with no bids yet either.

PS:  I sent a piece of rather fragile Sommerso glass to Australia recently - it survived the journey!

As one who can find nothing at all attractive about the works of Baxter (before you all get up in arms this is purely personal opinion and I don't expect folks to necessarily like my tastes ), could it be that these common run of the mill pieces are now being seen for what they are and their values will fall accordingly.
Contentious moi????

I just love the colour. The wider rim made me wonder, but I wasn't going to start checking the catalogues when I should be making dinner, esp as I'm not bidding.

Not at all, I agree completely. I've never understood the WF hype and did not not think it would last.

I said the same about Clarice Cliff in the 1980s  :(

That's what I am trying to navigate through - the hype Vs reality(?). As a newbie, one has to figure out what others are seeing.

My funds are very limited. I am also limited by size & weight of objects - I can't have anything I can't look after. Having already spent A$100 on orange vases that are cheap enough to use, I want to spend the next $100 in a more focused way. I don't want lots of one thing, which means I am not really a collector.

For example, I like the Chance handkerchief vases, but the prices here are OTT - and as soon as I saw the ruby cut glass one in pictures of an exhibition (Cambridge?), buying just for fun lost its attraction. That's the one I want. (But don't expect to actually get it!) Second would be the transparent ones.

The champagne taste I had as a girl hasn't dissipated with age. (Sigh)

Thank heavens Ivo I was beginning to think it was just me and I really was missing the meaning of life.
To a large extent the Clarice Cliff market has suffered a huge shake out with the top rare pieces continuing their heady heights albeit having levelled off , but the run of the mill more common pieces that had nothing to commend them other than the name have come back to much lower levels reflecting their status.

three pieces of Whitefriars sold at the auction I went to today (London/Essex borders) , two pewter bark vases, one amethyst volcano.  The two barks went to a dealer for £40 each, the volcano for £55, and there is commission to pay on those prices,  so the buy it now on this one is very reasonable.

:D:D:D

Hello Deb of Oz,

I can add my opinion to those of Ivo and Paul!

You want to spend your cash in a more focussed way?

You say your champagne tastes have not deserted you?

Use your gut instinct. You're not sure about WF, can't see what the fuss is about - leave it alone!

Find something you love, don't worry about who it's by.

Better still, find something you love that nobody else has found yet

Ah!  Moved to the Cafe means I can chat on this thread now!  8)

I think some of the allure of WF is that information about it is readily available and well covered.  www.whitefriars.com & www.whitefriars.org do a sterling job in identifying 'unknown' pieces and giving them patterns number for the uninitiated.

I have a great fondness for WF work, the later textured range is so 'of the era' and well made yet designed 'for the people'.  In that respect, it feels like a classic.

The fun really starts (as a collector) when you start recognising older shapes by 'gut feel' alone, simply by building up your confidence and knowledge.  In this respect, it's a good area to start collecting and also to continue building up your collection for years afterwards.

it is also useful to be able to identify things that are NOT Whitefriars... three Dartington vases sold as Whitefriars today at the same auction - they didn't make ,much money so the dealers obviously knew what they were looking at, but I was amazed the auctioneers could make such an obvious mistake.

may just be my monitor but the vase in the auction looks more like willow than pewter. It appears to have a greenish tint, whereas pewter is a more silver grey. I don't know if this would affect the value though.

To my mind the price seems reasonable but not great when you factor in postage. I've sold two medium barks in the past year and only got about £40 each for them.

As for what Paul & Ivo said, I'm tending to agree. Whitefriars was one of the first things I collected but my tastes soon moved on and I have sold off most of my collection. I really can't understand some of the prices realised now, particularly as many of the patterns are quite common.
