Post by: Andy on October 06, 2011, 04:23:18 PM
I know ive seen this somewhere, just been through a few books, cant find it, but i know someone will
recognise it immediately!
Its pretty old , loads of age , 5 inches, polished pontil.
My subconcious came up with clutha, I should be so lucky, but im sure its a rare one, and i know ive seen
a picture somewhere!

Are you thinking of Stevens and Williams Abbey Glass?
page 109 CH 20th Century British Glass.
I think I've seen something similar to this on the board as a jug - something tells me it was sold on ebay as Victorian? but I can't find a link now.

and two more here - these are what I thought were Abbey and they look very similar to the vase in the book, whereas your vase and the vase I linked to above have similarities but look less like the vase in the book.  I dont know if they are all S& W to be honest.

Thanks m, first one is very similar  ;D
It's probably S and W Abbey, or maybe Christopher Dresser, Clutha  :24:

and I'm sure there are more. My gut feeling is still Stevens and Williams/Royal Brierley but definitely not Abbey

My knowledge is very small but they look like Stevens and Williams shapes don't they?  Well the one on the Fieldings link does to me, and Andy's looks very like that one.  And I think Stevens and Williams did some quite large pontil marks as well, the pontil mark on Andy's vase looks similar to one on my vase.
I agree that they don't look like Abbey,  the finish doesn't look at all like the Abbey vase in the book.  That has a different kind of wider 'open' crackle
