Title: Archimede Seguso? Duck
Post by: TxSilver on August 29, 2011, 03:31:27 PM
I ran across this signed duck on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310341599724#ht_3318wt_1048. The duck and signature do not look right to me. I've never seen an A. Seguso duck with the legs stuck on like this. The style of the signature is 1970-80s, but A. Seguso didn't make this type glass then. Looking closely, the shape of the letters do not look right for his company, especially that curvy, plump S in Seguso. Thought I would get other people's opinion of this little duck.

hi Anita
I've compared the signature with the one I have on my ram.
There are several discrepancies, all three words.
that alone would steer me clear, oh and the price.

Did seguso ever apply feet like this with that ribbed effet seperating the "toes" ?

All done and said I don't like it, interesting though  :chky:

Your ram is great, Martin. It's a 70-80s piece, so the signature is right at home for the date. I don't remember seeing any A. Seguso sommerso animals from this time. Mainly just massello and remakes of his earlier transparent, bianco nero, and alabastro animals. I'm glad that you don't like it, either. With the feet on the side like that, one little nudge and the duck would topple over.

I thought that about the feet too,
almost as if it was an after thought to put them on,

"hey we got a pair of feet left over what shall we do ?"

I saw this duck for sale a few months ago....I didn't think it was 'signed' then.
Maybe this is one to watch?????????? >:D

The signature and the piece appears to be too sloppy for A. Seguso, IMHO. :wsh:

I checked some of his other pieces. This donkey looks like a generic version of a Cenedese donkey: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310341601129#ht_3947wt_1048. It is signed A. Bourbini. I'm not familiar with this artist. I thought maybe it was supposed to be Barbini, but I know Alfredo Barbini didn't make this piece, and if they had, it wouldn't have been signed.

he has sold a figure of two doves with the same signature on it,
That would worry me as a buyer

There was one of these on Antiques Master the other night:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SEGUSO-SOMMERSO-FLASK-STOPPER-CIRCA-1960s-21-TALL-/310341598387 - they didn't say who it was by, but I've always thought they were Flavio Poli. Am I wrong?

That is a very nice sommerso, Anne. It looks like Flavio to me.

Phew! Thanks Anita, :kissy:  the one on AM was exactly the same colours and I said smugly to himself, "that's a Flavio Poli" and then seeing the signed Seguso one I was feeling a bit sheepish.  :-[

Well, Flavio designed for Seguso, so that would work. There is one thing that bothers me about the bottle on eBay. Good sommerso was rarely signed back in the day. It may be because it would reflect and take away from the clean lines. Poli pieces were often executed by Archimede Seguso for Seguso. I've seen some pieces that were made both at Seguso and A. Seguso, so maybe Archimede retained some of the designs when he started his own company.

Ahhh right, that makes things clearer. I'm a Murano noobie! (You can tell!!!)

Oh, and the original duck on this topic reminds me of one we had on the board a while back but I can't recall it having feet, but it was nicknamed the sad duck due to its hangdog look. I can't find the earlier topic though...  :-\

There's a good one by Venini  :-[ at http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310341952881#ht_3530wt_1048. I wish we could see the signature better. It looks to be of the contemporary form, being written around the edge. The words look like Venini Murano Italia to me. These were on some of the earlier things, but not written like this. Can anyone see the signature better?

I do wish sellers wouldn't put sig pics on an angle like that - makes it so hard to see it properly, even with the bigger pics.

I found this very similar duck on a previous thread Anne:

Thanks Rosie, that's another one then. The one I recall wasn't a neodymium duck...

The way the neodymium duck's bill attaches makes me think of Mexico, but I haven't seen them work with neodymium there, though they might have. We can probably say that we have one of those abundant generic form ducks. These are the kind that drive one crazy trying to figure out who did them.

Hi Anita,  :hi:  The thread I just gave to Tina's duck is the duck I mentioned I had seen earlier without a signature:

I saw this duck for sale a few months ago....I didn't think it was 'signed' then.
Maybe this is one to watch?????????? >:D

I actually thought I had seen it for sale,  but it was Tina's question  here on the GMB.  I just remember vividly, that it wasn't signed.

How strange that the one on eBay has what appears to be a fresh, well defined signature, and this one hasn't?
How can we possibly explain that I wonder???

Rosie, I think they are by different makers, though they look similar. The neodymium duck's bill sticks up from the way it looks in the picture. This is what made me think it looked Mexican. Many of the Mexican ducks have bills that are applied like this. The original duck has a straighter bill. The generic form animals can drive me crazy trying to figure out who made them. :ho:

I did see one of these at the car boot this morning.  Unfortunately because I didn't read the thread properly I didn't check to see  the angle of his beak, but the beak was messily attached, I did check that.  It may not have been exactly the same I guess, but it struck me because I'd read the thread and it was the reddy colour over the purply glass.  It wasn't signed but had a 'sort of' polished base, not shiny neat and clear and looked slightly greasy.

Hi everyone,
This seller we are talking about always has "signed" pieces on his listings.
Everything is signed, even though the styles and signatures do not match.
I do believe they are fake signatures. Just my 2 cents.

Some of the signatures really look fake to me as well...

Something different:
I just saw this on eBay, I never saw that label, though it looks kind of "vintage",
but the base makes me wonder... strange that the base isnĀ“t polished and shiny on a piece like this one... no?

I think that one is legit, amarillo. Many of the tutti frutti pieces that AVeM made were not polished to a shine. The bottom was left slightly matte and looks unpolished in pictures where a flash was used. The Chinese pieces that are based on tutti frutti tend to have thicker, more awkward looking casing. I don't know who made the glass in the link, but it does look Murano to me.

Thanks TxSilver, ok, the label might be something new for the label collection then:) what might "AN" stand for....
