Title: Very large amber jug
Post by: Anne on January 31, 2006, 02:46:59 AM
Large amber jug, with polished pontil. Stands 12" (30cm) tall, and is 5.5" (14cm) across the base. No makers marks at all. Any suggestions to maker would be welcome please. :)

My guess is Empoli - between 1945 and ca. 1970 when large and well finished items were produced in bottle glass.

Thanks Ivo, I hadn't thought of it being bottle glass. It's darker than amber usually is, so that's probably why.

Hello Anne,

Is the handle of your jug hollow? I've just seen a tankard in the same design in a local charity shop. It has the same tapering shape, moulded bands to the body and an applied hollow handle and looks as if it is from the same maker.

The  tankard certainly isn't bottle glass, its in a smoky grey colour lead glass, quite similar to some Wedgwood pieces I've seen recently. To my mind, your jug looks better than bottle glass though it is difficult to tell from the picture and i am not so familiar with Empoli.

I'd be very interested to hear any further suggestions as it is a nice piece and looks somehow familiar, yet I cannot place it as yet......

Steven

Hi Steven,

No the handle is solid glass, not hollow. The whole thing is very heavy and well made, and is definitely a dark amber not smokey Wedgwood (I have 2 of the W/w vases).

I have seen a tankard with similar banding attributed to someone but I cannot remember who, nor can I find it again.
