Title: Blue Iridescent Vase - any ideas on where and when?
Post by: josordoni on September 05, 2006, 04:48:56 PM
This is a little blue vase, very pretty, no signature, no marks, just 3 ins 75 mm tall, 1.75 ins 45 mm dia across the rim.  Any help with where it is from, and approx when would be very helpful.

The photo's of the bottom look as if they are showing some faint engraving or etching.

I've just checked it again, and I can't see anything, the base of the glass has some circular light ripples in it, do you think this is what you are seeing?

Nope - it is definitely marked.  On the shot of the bottom at an angle I can read a series of numbers - looks like ??1972

On the picture of the bottom full on there is a word(s) on the top, then the other side of the center you can see the series of numbers.

I supersized the angled picture - the top looks like KS ?992 or something like that.

I've been squinting and turning it round, improving the pics, looking at it from the inside to try to see through the iridescence, I can just about see what you mean on the pics, but can I see it on the vase?  Don't be daft...

I'll try again in daylight tomorrow with a strong loup and see what I can see then...

In the meantime, if it DID say KS 1972, would that tell us anything?

Not my field, er, I don't have a field anyway, but is this a Ditchfield?

I've looked through the likely suspects, Ditchfield/Glasform, Heron, Isle of Wight, Okra, even when I thought the quality or thickness of glass not quite right (cos everyone likes a nice surprise...) , and I can't find the colour or the shape.

Stumped I am.

Have you tried breathing on it? Sometimes this brings up the marks if any.

Or a little talcum powder if it's engraved/etched into the surface.

I don't think it's Gozo.

It looks very much like a little Okra vase I have (dimensions more or less the same too).

Lynne -

It is not unusual for a digital camera to pick up etched marks that are barely seen with the naked eye.

I have found several pieces to be marked only when I was photographing them.  The latest was the Steuben bowl (which I still haven't had times to take better pictures of the mark.)

Good luck finding the marks tomorrow.  I love the vase!

I played about with it, with some talc on the base, and it is still not clear, but there is no doubt there is SOMETHING there.  I've put another couple of pics up on the Gallery, one of them I turned negative to see if dark on light would help matters.

It doesn't help that the iridescence has pooled right over the mark it would seem..

anyways here we are

positive signature (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-3127)

Original vase image has gone. Lynne do you still have a copy and, if so, add it back to the topic as an attachment please? Ta!
