Title: Czechoslovakia bowl - who and when?
Post by: Pain on August 26, 2009, 05:25:46 PM
Bonsoir from France here is a bowl that hubby hates but I like - is it a market special as he says.  I purchased it in France for next to nothing.  Is there an age or is it modern tat?

Hi Pain:

It's not my style of glass, and I haven't a clue who made it, but if I saw it offered cheaply, I'd buy it in a flash. True, I do buy glass without too much prompting; however, this piece looks worth taking a chance on. It's also the kind of piece that is fun to research, although I may not find out who made for months, or ever. It's pressed glass, isn't it? It doesn't look like any Chinese glass that I've come across recently. The acid test for Chinese is often,"Can I see it on eBay?"

Hi David

I am a true novice at the glass game so haven't even got a clue what pressed glass is.  I bought it in a second hand shop here in the charente for 5euros a bargain in my eyes.  I liked it becaue the colours go with my art deco lounge.  I have researched it on google but apart from the fact amber matches art deco I have found nothing - really I just want to shut OH up!  ;D

I'd be very surprised if it was Chinese to be honest. I think I'd be looking towards Germany or Czechoslovakia for this if it was mine.

Pain, a trawl through Pamela's catalogues might bring a result:
http://www.glas-musterbuch.de/ - good luck! It's a great looking item!!!

Start with Walther - I'm pretty sure it'll be there. :)

I saw one of these the other day at an auction, it had "Czechoslovakia" embossed around two of the feet of the bowl.

Pamela has this bowl in clear pink in her Museum http://pressglas-pavillon.de/schalen/01800.html and she has it attributed to Bernsdorf, but no date or pattern name/number is given for it.

I'm pretty sure it's the same bowl, amber and pink were two normal colours. The red is the difference - I wonder if it's meant to look like tortoiseshell, which was very fashionable at one time. I'd suspect your bowl dates from the 1930s, but I've not managed to pin it down more than that yet. Someone else may be able to add more about it though.

BTW what size is yours please?

Thanks Anne,

I am now going to have another dig and delve.  The bowl is 21cm diameter and stands 9cm tall

Lovely bowl. The title is ID = Bernsdorf and I notice Pamela's website to the same pink bowl is linked, but wasn't Bernsdorf a German company?

It was Jayne, which adds a puzzle, so I've removed the ID from the topic title and we'll see if anything else turns up. Perhaps Pamela can add more.

Cheers Anne, I don't know if you want to merge this one too and move it back to normal ID request section?

Best I can add for now is THANK YOU!

My Bernsdorf attribution is obviously wrong, the plate in the Bernsdorf catalogue is similar, but definitely not the same pattern. An early mistake and I shall be happy to correct this soon.

Many thanks again  :-*

The faux tortoise shell and green variant patterns have now had a positive ID as Czechoslovakian - Stolzle - Hermanova Hut :

Here are the reference photos of the Hermanva Hut 11408, 11408A, 18811 & 18845 trinket set with faux tortoiseshell decoration.

Fred.
I have managed to get another piece of this pattern...it is a decanter with a lovely arrow head stopper (not as previously thought a perfume bottle its much too big) I assume this came with small glasses and possibly a tray ...it measures 6.5 inches wide and 8 inches high with stopper in.
It looks like this one Simba;
