Title: ? vivid blue and bubbly

this little vase is 4 .75 inch tall, fairly light, sort of bubbly inside the glass, has a broke off pontil unpolished and some carbonised looking dark flecks in the glass. Not perfectly shaped sort of rusticly made.??? any ideas??

Seen a handful of similar pieces around, generally they appear old in style or although on close inspection are fairly modern. Some also look like Scavo glass, but again fairly recent I would suggest...

Dirk i think you're on to something there. I did a search on egyptian glass and came up with this http://www.egyptweb.norfolk.gov.uk/Eg00051.htm   its remarkably similar. Im half excited half sceptical.

 I think if it was really that old it wouldnt be as vivid blue, the blue colour is what stood out most when i saw it first.  Maybe its a modern reproduction of an egyptian flask say made for tourists.. im not sure. I dont think its scavo because thats heavy and this is very light. It would be nice it was a real ancient artifact but i dont think id be that lucky. :ra: :X: :huh:

Sorry - didn´t mean to raise expectations...  :ooh: Should have said very contemporary
egyptian. There seems to be a real flood of drinking glasses, decanters etc. and usually
in this distinctive blue.
Wonder why blue exactly? Is there a certain ingredient especially available there?  :huh:

Just found about the colour Egyptian Blue on wikipedia -calcium copper silicate. According to that the Egyptians have used it for thousands of years and its considered the very first synthetic pigment.  They were very advanced this is intriguing. The plot thickens. :-\

Dirk, yes desert sand which has the quartz thats heated and mix with other minerals to make the pigment.

This seedy, blue glass can often be recycled glass.  It's from a dirty batch too.  I'd say this is a modern, recycled glass vase.
