Title: Davidson Glass Hand Painted Water Jug
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on September 25, 2010, 06:24:46 PM
I thought I would post this on the GMB as I found it quite interesting. I think it is quite common in just clear glass and rare in blue cloud glass. I cannot remember seeing one hand painted before.

The frosted panels are hand painted and each one decorated with yellow and red flowers, also a red painted stripe down one side of the handle and around the rim

Ohhh I've not seen a hand-painted one before either Roy. I would suspect that the decoration was done elsewhere, but Chris Stewart or Adam Dodds can probably tell us more.

Hi Adam, good to hear from you again. :) Do you know if the alternate clear/frosted panels are a normal finish for Davidson Chippendale? I'm guessing the hand-painting was done elsewhere but am wondering if this is a Davidson piece or if it's one of the lookalike versions...

Anne

To to clarify the jug is only clear the painted panels with the flowers are not frosted as such but painted to give the look of frosted glass sorry if I confused you

Really strange. I assume hand-painted as well, which is reminiscent of Bagley. Could it have been experimented on by someone outside the factory, or was it a trial piece?

Ahhh I see Roy, thanks. I'd assumed from what you said that the frosting was integral... even more curious now! :)

I thought it also looked like decorated Bagley

Hi,

You do occaisonally find pieces of Davidson glass that have been hand painted. I have a 1910 fruit set which has been painted with flowers etc. Also a trinket set which has pieces of painted paster added to it. As far as we know the decoration was not done by Davidson. In their records I have found only one instance where Davidson paid for glass to be decorated. That was in the 1930s and was for a picture to be painted on a cigarette box.

Several years ago a Jacobean water jug which had been decorated with lead strips (as in a piece of stained glass) went for silly money on eBay. I suspect that was someone's craft project.

Regards

Chris

Anne — Yes, but not frequently seen.   I've seen alternate panels frosted (acid-matted) on just two patterns, both conventional Davidson green.   One was a 1210 Chippendale Sweet Pea Vase, reference 1210Y "part matted", the other a standard 278 vase, i.e. not Oval, not "D"ed, and not "/10"ed.

Bernard, thank you, that's interesting to know (especially as I collect Chippendale!)

Chris, is there any chance of photos of your plaster-decorated trinket set please? I've seen a Bagley one with applied flowers, but never a Davidson one.

Hi Anne,

It's currently in box 99 in the garage. We are in the process of photographing all of our glass for Davidson Glass an identification guide, as soon as I unearth it I will post a picture. If I remember the plaster was falling off.

Regards

Chris

Thanks Chris, look forward to seeing it. Are you in need of pics of any other Davidson pieces you don't have examples of? Perhaps some of us will have bits that may fill in gaps.
