Title: New to the forum...heavy English bowl w/ silver plated rim...please help!
Post by: JayC on December 05, 2011, 05:07:49 PM
I am brand new to this forum and ignorant when it comes to glass and/or crystal, (unless it comes with a name, like Waterford, etched on it somewhere). This bowl was filthy when I picked it up at a garage sale but I liked the solid, heavy feel of the piece so I bought it for a buck. Once I cleaned off the rim I noticed that it said "Made in England" and "Silver Plate"...that tipped me off that it was English; I'm quick that way.  In any event, I've looked all over for this exact pattern of glass and haven't been able to find anything quite similar.  I suspect, if the "Made in England" stamp on the silver plate is dated similarly to that of pottery, that the bowl was made sometime after 1890...but any help there would be appreciated also.  It's about 8 1/2" in diameter and 2 1/2" high. It has a few chips on those large protuberances but now that it's cleaned up it looks terrific.  I'd really like to gather some history on the bowl.  Thanks!

George Davidson from the 695 suite. The design (1923) is old but I suspect this bowl may little older than 1966, when Abrahams (a metal plater) took over the company. Plated fittings were pretty fashionable in the 1950/60s and into the 1970s.

Thank you!  I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond but I really appreciate your answer.  I found similar glass on line and they look very similar.  Again, thank you!!
