Title: Shetland Glass vase
Post by: glassobsessed on January 30, 2011, 07:16:38 PM
Saw this small vase this morning and snapped these photos as I had never heard of Shetland Glass before. Britains most northerly glassworks I presume.....

The vase was quite nicely made, thinly blown, with trailed glass and chips marvered in to form the decoration, about 4 inches tall, ground and polished base.

While chatting to Ron Wheeler about the vase (he had seen it earlier) he told me that Shetland Glass was started by Chris Rouse with the help of a government grant some time in the early to mid 1980s. Rouse had previously been a glass blower at Isle of Wight Studio Glass. It seems that Shetland Glass did not last for long. Anyone have any more info?

John

There's nothing in "Scotland's Glass", the book, there's nothing in the new Hajdamach. I haven't investigated Scotland's Glass the website yet.
It's a lovely thing, John - I'm having a vague wonder if this might be related to the stoppered bit Chilternhills is currently trying to id?

Shetland Art Glass is currently on Ebay at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHETLAND-ART-GLASS-LITTLE-GREEN-BIRD-NEW-BOX-/260728882688 which shows a box with the label.

Sorry Sue, I should of mentioned I looked in Scotland's Glass and on Scotland Glass but drew a blank. Didn't think to try Hajdamach though!

Rose, that is a contemporary maker of fused and slumped glass by the look of it, sadly no connection I guess. What a happy coincidence that there is another Shetland Glass item on ebay at present (and with a box that is very IoWSG in style - thanks Ross).

I found Glansin - and the little birdie, but didn't think Glansin had anything to do with it - it's fused, while Shetland is hot-worked glass from the pot.

Perhaps somebody at Glansin might know more about Shetland Glass?

Shetland Glass are shown as having been at Unit 1-2 Blydoit Industrial Estate, Shetland, Shetland Islands, ZE1 0UG
Phone: 01595 880432

Unit 1 is now occupied by Blydoit Fish (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=60.139635,-1.264522&spn=0.005662,0.022423&z=16&layer=c&cbll=60.139708,-1.264243&panoid=unSAd1d7AlITiWO8tvwSkA&cbp=12,30.97,,0,14.85) so I'm thinking they are no longer there.

Hi I worked with Chris Rouse at Shetland glass, this is a piece from the Shetland Shoreline collection, haven't seen one for years!

Thanks for the info, always good to have a name. Do you remember if the collection included other shapes and colours?

There were about a dozen shapes in each of the ranges, the shetland shoreline was made in an aquamarine blue, sargasso green and an orange. There were four collections, the others were "feathered", "irridised" and "the artists pallet".
My favorite was the shetland shoreline!

As an aside, the logo was designed by Martin Evans who has a studio on the Isle of Wight; www.gloryartglass.com

Scotland's Glass would love to add this piece of history of course!!!

If someone can put words and images together it would be greatly appreciated.

If someone puts together words in a coherent order, someone else  would be pleased to edit them, so don't let worries about writing standards and spilling put you off.

These are both signed C.R. Rouse.  Green one has the Shetland Glass label, very similar in design but not colour to the IOWSG Gemstone range.

Thanks Suzy, looks like two whole new patterns and different from the perfume bottle that Kevin linked.

Late to this but just wanted to say I love the designs of the bottles.  Gorgeous colours and decor.

I also think the graphic of the label design is fantastic.
