Title: Etched Cased Cobalt Vase with Unusual Signature
Post by: peterpontil on October 05, 2012, 11:37:58 AM
Hello all, just got this vase, its cased deep blue (cobalt) about 5 inches x 5 inches. Thought it may be Caithness but unsure the engraving is not like any ther Caithness ive seen its very deep and textured. It has a signature or pattern name etched to he base which ive never seen before and cant make out. Any help in iding the vase and signature would be highly appreciate.

Thankyou :)

The quality of the engraving is not great and so I attribute this as being a a relatively cheap vase that the signatory has at a later stage engraved decoration onto with a "Dremel" type tool - as opposed to sandblasting or wheel cutting.

Yes, Peter, I think that is the way it was probably done - although I am not expert enough to be 100% certain.  I guess I would want you to look at the vase as if it had no engraving or signature - where might it be from.  I suspect China, Poland, or one of the other generic makers.

You should realise that many glass firms(some quite significant) did not make their own glass or crystal.  They bought in blanks and did their own cutting or engraving.  For instance there are quite a number of Irish firms that produced small cut crystal items.   It is my understanding that only Waterford actually produced the crystal they used.  Similarly many smaller Swedish makers bought blanks from Orrefors or Kosta/Boda and made a business out of engraving them for sale.
